# 846 - Modern Commemoratives Half Dollars - Part 8

in LeoFinance4 years ago

Today we will continue the series "The Modern American Commemorative Half Dollars".

The info below comes mostly from: https://moderncommemoratives.com/

"The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. That year, the US Mint released commemorative half dollar coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. Since that date, commemorative coins have been issued nearly every year to celebrate famous American people, places, events, and institutions.

Each commemorative coin program is authorized under an Act of Congress. The Act typically specifies the subject to be commemorated, the denomination of coins to be issued, and the maximum authorized mintage for each. Additionally, most commemorative coin programs include surcharges added to the cost of each coin, which will be distributed to specified beneficiary organizations or fund projects that benefit the community."

They were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted, but only one of each design.

The eighth is the MS70 1991-1995-P "World War II".

"The 1991-1995 World War II Half Dollar was minted and issued in 1993 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War II. The commemorative coin program included three different coins, a clad half dollar, silver dollar, and $5 gold coin."

PCGS graded 1,924 1991-1995-P "World War II", with 172 as MS70. 197,072 1991-1995-P "World War II" were minted in Philadelphia.

I bought this coin in 2014 for $142.00 and today's price is around $125.00. The issue price was $9.00.

The obverse depicts the faces of a solider, sailor, and airman looking upwards. A B-17 bomber flies overhead and a “V” for victory is in the background.

It was designed by George Klauba.

The reverse depicts a battle scene from the Pacific Islands.

It was designed by Bill J. Leftwich.

Okay, I gotta have this! My both my great grandfather were WWII Vets . My Dad's dad was in the Airforce, my Mom's dad was in the Army! I will start looking.

My father was a WWII veteran, also. He fought in the Brazilian Force, in Italy.

I can see this half dollar being very much in demand @ronavel!! With the Flying Fortress on the Obverse, and a battle scene from the Pacific Islands on the Reverse.
I believe this is undervalued, a very nice commemorative coin!🤗

Remember that it is not made of silver, but the price could be a little higher...

So very true @ronavel,A collectible my friend😀 That would be extra nice if they Were minted in silver! Hope you're having a good day my friend!🤗

My father served in WWII and in the South Pacific as a medic. He had polio as a child and could not do active duty, but they took him for the medic role. Just a week before he passed away, he had shared with me the only war story he ever told, and it was about how hungry they were. They didn't have many rations, but apparently the locals brewed a beer that was 'hearty' and that's how they staved off starving. I never saw him drink anything during my childhood but an occasional glass of dinner sherry with my mom. He never spoke of his war experiences beyond that. I can't help but wonder if maybe he was ready to talk about that time, but his time came a week later. I'll never know I suppose. Thanks for sharing the coin @ronavel! Take care and have a good night!

My father was a captain of Brazilian Army and fought in Italy. He did not like to talk to us about the war...

I can't even begin to imagine what any of them might have gone through.
