Suriname | Another Day Another Increment In Gas Prices || When Does It End

The gas prices in Suriname are going up again, and things are looking bleak for the majority of people it seems. It seems like I wrote about the last increase just yesterday, but it's been a few weeks now. Back then I predicted that another one would follow, and sadly I was right. The government is slowly removing all subsidies it was providing on gas pricing, in an attempt to balance the already bad economy due to blatant corruption and the pandemic effect on top of that.

I'm sitting here thinking how people even manage to pay this each day nowadays. The price per liter is now SRD 22 and some cents, which is our local currency. That's about 1 USD per liter for basic gasoline. This might not seem like much, but when you take into account that the average salary is probably somewhere between $150 and $200, the perspective changes real quick.

Another reason they have to remove subsidies, is because presumably people are buying up the cheaper gas locally to then sell it at a profit to our neighbors across the borders. That's the problem with corrupt border patrol, money talks, and with the right amount anyone can get right with anything.

Sometimes it saddens me to say how this country is going downhill faster than a perfectly round boulder. But then other times I see the same people who complain about it defend the government who is responsible, and then I am indifferent to it. Nonetheless, we always feel at least a bit of patriotism towards the place we were born and brought up. In the end we can deal with it, try to make a change, but most importantly make sure that our family is well taken care of and that we find happiness in the little things.

And that rent for most houses/apartments are priced in U$ or Euro, while the majority of Suriname earns SRD's. Outrageous (sigh....)

Luckily I am able to pay my rent with an alternate currency: my sanity. 🤣 !LOL

The same thing happens here, and my country is still considered one of the most corrupt nations in the world. I know it is hard at first when the government removing the subsidies in gasoline, but i think it will bring benefits in the longer term, hopefully, the money is well spent in the other sector of the country.

Ah yes, our countries seem somewhat similar in that way. Both have gone corrupt after independence from Dutch rule.

but i think it will bring benefits in the longer term

I think so as well. The problem is that many people here are very short sighted and fail to see that bigger picture. They then get displeased and vote in an even more corrupt party that starts the destruction all over again.

Yes, I am not sure if we inherit that trait from the Dutch, or just a newly freed politicians taking advantage of the common people. Hope one day we can be free from the corrupt politicians, : )

A lot of Javanese decendant over there in Suriname isn't it?

or just a newly freed politicians taking advantage of the common people

Yes, this is what I meant. Not that we inherited it.

A lot of Javanese decendant over there in Suriname isn't it?

Indeed. Around 15% of the population. My partner and her family are a part of that 15%, so I often get to experience the culture that came over and evolved over time. We actually started planning a trip to Indonesia in 2019, but of course that was postponed.

The prices won't really stop going up so long as the Russia/Ukrainian issue is resolved and gas is still the cheapest energy option. So until renewable energy sources become cheap enough to be lower than gas, I don't see us losing reliance on gas.

Renewable energy becoming cheap will probably only happen when the oil companies allow it.

This gas issue seems nonstop everywhere.
In the states it is high around $4.14/gal
It is more for diesel.
I can relate to the fact in the US folks earn more to pay for the gas.
The fear and the war has caused all the issues about price.
We have enough gas for everyone.

Weirdly enough diesel is actually cheaper here, in an attempt to boost the industrial economy.
I agree that there should technically be enough gas for everyone.
The FUD created by the war is being heavily manipulated to maximize profits. That's the way the cookie crumbles, unfortunately.
