I think one of the main advantages they mentioned was the ability to develop apps on different layers and changing between them without too many issues. But yes right now people are bullish on it mainly because of the ETH fees and if ETH 2.0 fixes this, then Polygon might not do as well.

I'm not sure it would solve the speed issue. Unless Ethereum makes a huge shift. That would be reduced earnings per block but more blocks in a period of time. At the moment they are 3 minutes but many new blockchains are seconds and that's very well possible with a PoS system but would require a total rework of the block production. Will be interesting to see all the changes they make or if they make them or not.
