RE: # 846 - Modern Commemoratives Half Dollars - Part 8

My father served in WWII and in the South Pacific as a medic. He had polio as a child and could not do active duty, but they took him for the medic role. Just a week before he passed away, he had shared with me the only war story he ever told, and it was about how hungry they were. They didn't have many rations, but apparently the locals brewed a beer that was 'hearty' and that's how they staved off starving. I never saw him drink anything during my childhood but an occasional glass of dinner sherry with my mom. He never spoke of his war experiences beyond that. I can't help but wonder if maybe he was ready to talk about that time, but his time came a week later. I'll never know I suppose. Thanks for sharing the coin @ronavel! Take care and have a good night!

My father was a captain of Brazilian Army and fought in Italy. He did not like to talk to us about the war...

I can't even begin to imagine what any of them might have gone through.
