"The Half of It" was Indeed a Different Kind of Love Story

On days when I just want to escape reality, I always try to drown myself in anime, movies or manga. In one of those days, I tried scrolling down on Netflix trying to find something interesting. I usually look at some thumbnails and when something gets my attention, I try to check its info.

I don't really like watching trailers because some of them spoils the movie... but as you check the info of a movie on Netflix, they usually automatically play the trailer if it's available.

So, the same thing happened... the movie's thumbnail which is in a digital art style got my attention, I clicked for more info and the trailer automatically played. Guess what? A few seconds of the trailer got me and I decided to actually watch it. The movie I'm talking about is entitled, "The Half of It".

What is the "The Half of It" about?

The story is basically about a Chinese-American teenager named Ellie Chu. She is an intelligent, but kind of introverted and shy type of student. She lives with her dad who is widowed in a small town called Squahamish and she earns extra money by writing some papers for her schoolmates.

One day, one of her schoolmates named Paul Munsky asked for her service. However, it isn't for a school-related paper. He wanted her to write a love letter to his crush who is also a student in their school, Aster Flores.

But what if the letter writer ends up falling in love with her as well?

It's basically a story of love and connection. If you're curious, here's the trailer of the said movie.

What I think about the movie...

I personally enjoyed the movie. The story is quite unique especially in how it portrayed the meaning of love. I also like how they included some philosophical views on the topic.

I personally like writing letters to special people, so I find it interesting how the characters in the movie communicated through letters. I find it cute and genuine given that cellphones were already available in the film as well.

Aside from the main topic of love, the movie also delved into familial bond and relationship. It depicted various types of families and how being brought up in such a family affected the teens. It's great in a way that viewers would be able to relate to it.

The actors also did a great job in acting. I like how strong Ellie Chu is, how dorky Paul is and how artistic Aster is. Their character's growth as a person was also shown as the story progressed. I love it when there's character growth. It's kind of motivating. :)

All in all, I like it and I recommend it to everyone who is interested in witnessing a different kind of love story. ^^ I can't say that it's my favorite, but it's the kind of movie which I wouldn't mind watching again. :)
