Return to Galway

We are lucky to live on Ireland's West, as anyone who has been here will tell you, it possesses rugged beauty and is inhabited by a friendly and welcoming community. I am a native of Galway myself, but lived away from here for over fifteen years. I spent time in Australia, South East Asia, USA and for the most part Dublin city and County Meath on Ireland's East coast.

Covid-19 was tragic for so many, bringing death, job losses and hardship to so many worldwide. I was extremely lucky in so far as it actually paved the way for me to move back to my home town of Galway.

We live just outside the city in the gorgeous wide open Galway countryside, with Galway city on our doorstep giving us the best of both Urban and Rural living, which is exactly what we wanted when moving West. We have a number of beautiful beaches on our doorstep and that is what this post is going to focus on, the gorgeous beaches and rock pools beside An Spidéal as the Gaelic speaking locals call it or Spiddal as the tourists and some Irish people call it.

All to ourself

We have lots of beaches and picturesque coastal areas right on our doorstep spread around the surrounding hinterland. We often visit these as a family on warmer Summer days. Last week was not that warm, but one of my sons went on a play date and my wife was tired, so I decided to go to the beach with my 3 year old and 9 year old sons.

My sister had told me about a beautiful secluded beach, but I did not follow the directions perfectly and we ended up in a slightly different location, a happy accident if you will. Here are some photos of this coastal paradise:

"Searching for Creatures"

At our first accidental location, there were rock pools galore and after spotting a crab in one pool my kids started searching for more creatures and they found loads, which was fun, educational and both my boys loved the adventure and felt like mini Bear Grylls as they navigated the rocks carefully with my regularly carrying my 3 year old little man.

Have a look at the photos below to see all of the sea creatures that we found, zoom in and you'll find even more, how many can you spot? We got well into double figures for the day which the guys were thrilled about.

So many Rockpools

We set out to go to the beach for a swim and to make some sand castles and kick around the football, and we ended up finding an deserted beach and an abundance of rock pools and marine life, which was exactly what my kids love.

They spent a number of hours exploring the rocks pools and searching for sea creatures. It really was a lot of fun and anything that puts big smiles on their faces is a win for me.

So we eventually left the rock pools and drove on another mile or so to find the beach that we had set out to find in the first place and it was gorgeous with only a handful of people. I did not get many photos this time, as we were busy swimming, making sand castles and playing football.

I did manage to get a few snaps though which I've included below.

Oh yes, we also found this little mini beach up near the rock pools and set about building some sand castles, but they would not set as this sand was too course and dry, but luckily the next beach had perfect sand castle building sand, so our luck was in.

You live in a wonderful place man, the nature is really breathtaking over there. Awesome shots :)

@tipu curate

We are lucky to live where we do surrounded by nature and really friendly people. Thanks a million for the support as always.

What a cool place! I don't like those typical beaches with tons of clean sand and people frying. This one would be perfect. Lots of plants to shoot too.
And the rock pools to explore. Awesome :)

I actually love all kinds of beaches, I just love being near the sea in general I think, but ya not s fan of packed out beaches, I prefer a really quiet one of the beaten track.

Thanks a million for the curation recommendation, delighted 👌

Yeaaa the quiet ones are nice. Impossible to find them here i the summer season though. Always people around. That's why I like them out of season. Still the rocky ones you showed is so much more interesting.

You're very welcome :)

Ya the beaches are always thronged there alright, I'm looking forward to some daysnon the proper sunny beaches in tge South of Spain in June.

When I was a kid, at one point we lived around the corner from a beach with so many rockpools. I loved going there and poking around, looking for crabs and things. 😁 It looks like you and the kids had a great day!

Ya it was a brilliant day, the lads were in their element with the exploration of the rock pools...

That must have been sweet living so close to a beach in your place as the weather is so good.

Woww... These set of pictures are dazzling. You are your kids had lots of fun on this one. That's surely a good way to enjoy abundance of nature. Hehe.

I also like how you all have this environment to yourself. It's not like those highlighted populated areas (at least for now). I wonder when I will be in this sorta environment. Hehe

Thanks for sharing this on DreemPort.

Hi there, thanks for stopping by and for the kind words. Really appreciate it. Have you been on dreemport for long?

Yeah. I have been on DreemPort for a long time. Hehe. It's a fairly new project though and it is growing decently

Very good... I just joined last week and it seems like a good idea.

What a wonderful place! Lots of interesting things to see and explore. A photographer's playground :D

Got here through Dreemport :)

Thanks friend, it certainly was a photographer's playground

Ah stap boi. I went to Spideal on a stag and it was probably the best laugh i've ever had. We got a minibus out from Galway one Sunday and half way there the bus stopped and in walked a little dwarf and handcuffed himself to the stag who was my best friend. We went out to Spideal and went to 1 of the local pubs. The locals nearly fell off their bar stools when they saw little Jimmy. They thought he was a fairy. We quickly exited the bar because Jimmy was getting too much attention. We went to another bar a mile down the road. When the bus pulled up there were around 50 auld lads looking out the window waiting for the little man. I swear to god. I was dying laughing. One lad was onto Jimmy about a fairy fort out the back of his house and would Jimmy know of them. Jimmy was like "I'm a human being, not a mystical creature."
Some lads from the pub before then tried to kidnap Jimmy back to the first pub in a coal sack so we had to get out of Spideal. Poor aul Jimmy who works in a record store in Kilkenny is still traumatized from the events.

This sounds pure gas!!! Enough in there for Hangover 3, the stags do be mighty craic altogether! I've one coming up in Munich in September, I might see if Jimmy will travel 🤔😅

He cost the guts of a grand. He paid for himself when we went back to Galway and won a keg in a limbo dance competition. Munich is some spot. A relation of mine works in the Irish pub down there. It will be peak October fest when you hit down.

won a keg in a limbo dance competition

🤣🤣 brilliant!!

Ya Munich is a city I've never been to, so that should be class..

Wow, you are surrounded by so much beauty at your end and it a huge blessing to be able to feel natures beauty at your doorsteps.

This is great, i enjoyed checking the images from the beginning to the end of article. Great job.

Thanks a lot my friend, delighted that you enjoyed the snaps.

such a wonderful country and great photos :-) thank you and thanks to @dreemport for bringing me to your posting

Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed the photos.

Thanks a lot @beeber, it's great to see dreemport bringing additional engagement to my posts. I hope all is well with you.

hey @ablaze :-) Great to see you posting regularly in Dreemport, my friend. Loved this post. I've been across to Ireland twice before... the first time I went with my sister, Mom and a friend and we flew into Dublin, hired a car and drove out to the West Coast and then did a big circular route up the coast, into Northern Ireland, across the North coast and back down again into Dublin. It was a beautiful sunny week. Loved the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. Second trip we did the Ring of Kerry, just my sister, Mom and me... it rained the entire trip and was foggy as hell. We saw...nothing! :-( it was literally a trip of coffee shop stops !LOLZ Funnily enough I was just chatting to the hubster the other day about plans for the summer and I suggested going across to Ireland again. He hasn't been before and neither have my 9 and 11 year old boys and I love it there... would certainly include Galway in our next trip. The coast is beautifully showcased by you here. !ALIVE
