is that right? Three words whose meaning varies according on the mood. Say it flat and inquisitive: Is that right? You are very questioning, looking for confirmation, yearning to understand. Tell it with a raised eyebrow and a drawn-out drawl, Is that right? and you have just called someone a liar without really calling them one.

Correct? Though they are unable to determine how, the kid realizes instantly they have been busted. Disguised as inquiry, the question is actually a trap; it's a chance to confess before the proof emerges.

You get something that alters your view of the world, some wild fact, some surprise connection, some truth hidden in plain sight, and all you can do is Am I correct? Said in low voice almost to oneself as your brain rearranges around this fresh information.

It also refers to the half-listening, the pretending-to-care, the one browsing their phone as you speak. Ah-huh is this right? mhmm... Not true questions at all, only sounds molded like engagement, placeholder noises denoting my presence but not genuinely so.
