Most people are oblivious to ants. They move in rows, scatter crumbs, and vanish before you can properly see them. However, there was one ant that stuck out to me. I referred to her as Dot. I never understood why she caught my attention, but maybe it was because she paused at every turn, as if contemplating something. She was navigating rather than merely crawling.

Every morning, she would arrive at my window as if it were her own personal checkpoint. While the other ants scurried and crashed, Dot strolled purposefully. She carefully circled her discoveries, tested the way ahead, and then made her move. There was something intentional, even beautiful, about her.

Sometimes I would drop her a breadcrumb to see how she worked. Watching her carry it, trip, adjust, and continue going reminded me of perseverance. Of patience. Dot was more than simply an insect; she was a little lesson in perseverance. I haven't seen her in a while, but I still check the window sill. It's strange how something so small can remain with you for so long.
