Originally a joke, the kind of idea someone tosses out and everyone laughs at until it unexpectedly becomes real started the carrot-eating contest. Curious and entertained, a tiny throng gathered around a table covered in brilliant orange carrots. The directives were basic. Eat as much as you can; no tricks, no cocktails.

Everything was first wonderful. As the crunch began, people chuckled, screamed, and warped their faces. Carrots crunching repeatedly sounded almost like music in a bizarre rhythm. Some contestants entered with a strong chewing, poised to win. Others started aggressively but soon slowed down as carrots became clear to be not as simple as they originally seemed.

The mood altered at the midway point. Intended originally for enjoyment, it turned into a quiet endurance challenge. Swallowing became hard, jaw tightened, cheekbones hurt. The carrot's sweetness disappeared to make way for effort and resolve. Some laughed at themselves and walked away, head shaking.

A few still hung on, nevertheless. Their focus grew; their actions more deliberate but slower. The crowd no longer played any role. It was about finishing what they started.
