"Are you ready to lose again?" Beau yelled as he arrived early at Jasper's home for a weekend fishing trip.

"Just finishing my monthly budget. Don't want to be caught again without an emergency savings."

Beau peered at the stamped charity envelope, then pointed.

"If you're concerned about your own family's security, then why are you funding that?" He pointed at the return address on the envelope, then continued, shaking his head. "All they want to do is eat free. Many of them don't even need it."

"Funding what? And who are "they"?" Jasper's eyebrows came together as his nose flared. Several rebuttals stood ready on his lips, but he remained quiet.

Sensing Jasper's disapproval, he stammered, "Look, I take care of my own. I know you do also. Those who don't, they panic. Instead of looking for employment, they stand in line during the slightest sign of trouble looking for handouts."

Jasper eased back into his chair. His chest tightened as though Beau had just landed a punch to his gut.

Having no reason to cancel their trip yet, he readied himself, then bid his family goodbye.

His mind raced with an uncomfortable feeling that bode of a forewarning, so he remained silent the rest of the trip.

He never told the neighbors why his family downsized when moving to their neighborhood. So, Beau didn't know that last year, he placed his pride in his back pocket, pulled out his keys in the front one, then headed out early to get in line at the local food bank.

He was one of those people who stood in line to eat free after his layoff. When he returned home, his children didn't ask where the food came from.

Beau was his neighbor the past two years. Not extremely close, he had heard others make remarks about Beau's narrow opinions. But Beau had not voiced any of those in his presence.

On the return trip home, Jasper knew their relationship had changed.

He said nothing. Instead, he inquired of their neighbors the stance Beau revealed to him on several issues. Now, he had a background in which to press him at their next meeting to ensure he wasn't of the personality who told different people conflicting answers.

Equipped with the needed answers, he confronted Beau.

Jasper allowed him to speak, then broke eye contact and lowered his head. Moments later, he explained to Beau his convictions on the various issues they discussed.

Happy that he elicited answers directly from Beau, he received confirmation of his next move. The answers on various issues may not have loomed large enough to break a friendship, but Beau's opinions weren't healthy to him, his family, and society as a whole. Jasper concluded that the world contained too many individuals already with unhealthy outlooks on people and life in general.

He thought back over the two years during their occasional trips. Why didn't he discern his personality?

The answer came quickly.

The face Beau displayed to him was false. Apparently, Beau knew from conversations with the other neighbors, Jasper's strong commitment to helping others, his sympathetic and empathetic personality. He couldn't understand why he was drawn to friendship with Beau.

Later, Jasper thought of all the people that make up this society. He didn't regret accompanying Beau that weekend. The occasion turned out to be for a good cause.

He ended their fishing trips on a good note. His fervor in his casting technique that weekend paid off. The bet he won for catching the "big one" was placed in the donation column of his budget.

He smiled, knowing Beau had partially funded the food bank.

No dijo nada.

Poignant! I always say the best way to know people is from their talks and the things they stand for. It's easy for Beau to be judgemental because he's never worn the other shoe which Jasper is very well familiar with. It's sad their friendship had to end or fizzle out but when beliefs and values are different, the relationship may not last no matter how hard the parties try.

Your story encourages us to see beyond our differences and let compassion bridge gaps. Though-provoking and well-written! Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day. !PIMP 💕

A person with bigotry and hatred in their heart for a specific group of people can't control their actions and words sometimes. My mother had a saying she imparted to us: "if it's in you, it's got to come out." I truly believe it. Pretense is easy, but one's mouth sometimes can't control their internal thoughts.

If you listen carefully or read with an insightful eye what others are saying, you can detect the "code" words used. Another saying by my mom: "nice nasty". I try to distance myself from others who don't have the same values as I do. And charity for the less fortunate is a high priority for me.

Coming from a background where my siblings and I were in the position that we had to accept "free lunch" at school, I don't take lightly anyone labeling anyone as less than person.

Thanks so much for your visit and kind compliment for my story. I appreciate the engagement and analysis. Take care.

I loved the way you describe Jasper's internal conflict as he comes to realize that Beau's opinions are not aligned with his own. I also like the way you resolve the story, with Jasper winning the bet and donating the money to the food bank. It's a satisfying ending that shows how Jasper is able to stand up for his beliefs and make a positive difference in the world.

Yes, one should stand firm in their convictions. Just like there are good convictions, there are bad. Individuals decide which ones they want to believe in and who they want to associate with in line with those beliefs.

In my opinion, it's best to promote good values for the sake of society.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I appreciate your input and support. Take care.

Well done. It hits home, in all the right ways.

I've been on the receiving end and giving end of food. Your words ring true to me :)

So have I been on the receiving and giving end of food. And I know many who have had to ask, not out of laziness, for support in other areas. The bible verse that states it is better to give than to receive is true in all areas of one's life.

I can truly empathize on so many levels. Individuals who don't have the same mindset of giving as I do, I treat them with a long-handled spoon and sincerely hope that they never have a need in any area of this life.

Thanks so much for your visit and understanding for my story. I can see it is heartfelt. I appreciate your kind compliment. Take care and have a wonderful rest of your week.

Nice story!
Even when you spend a few minutes with people, it is possible to know them by the way they talk
Just the words that come out from their mouth is enough

Yes, it is possible to gauge a person's personality when you first meet them. Prolonged exposure to a person can reveal even more about them in helping you to decide whether you want them in your sphere of acquaintances. The more relaxed people become, the more they divulge.

I appreciate that you liked my story and for your visit. Take care.
