Marla stepped back a few inches and haphazardly waved her hands in the air. "No!" was the image they portrayed as Fawny held out the hideous looking red liquid in a cup. Marla thought Fawny was joking when she shoved the cup in her chest.

But she wasn't.

"Here drink this! My newest healthy recipe." Fawny's expression with lips turned downward hinted to Marla that she wasn't going to like it. But she wanted Marla to try it out anyway.

The drink looked horrible with the dark violet and crimson color. Marla surrendered and accepted the drink. Although repugnant, the aroma was a subtle sweet flavor almost akin to strawberries.

Whipped cream on top reminded Marla of ice cream on top of blended green beans. The thought almost made her gag.

"What am I supposed to do with this?" Marla tried to protest, but Fawny waved her off.

"Drink it. Just a low-dose cocktail mixture. It's a bit thick, I know. But it's a healthier alternative than those sugary juices you constantly consume.

Marla hesitated, trying to think of any reason not to drink the substance.

But Fawny was Marla's best friend. She just couldn't say "no". From an early age, Marla's only desire was to please. Confrontation didn't associate itself with her.

Marla acquiesced. Her heart beat faster.

In that moment, all she could think of was her mother. Attempting to minimize her health conditions naturally, her mother maintained her steady intake of natural vitamins and minerals to stave off her high blood pressure and later, low blood pressure.

Early on, exasperated and disappointed, Marla's mother shook her head as a sign of disgust upon realizing her daughter's personality. Words such as "Be your own person and stand your ground" was ingrained in Marla's psyche.

Her mother also preached daily that in everything, moderation was the key.

But the words never seemed to stick, as Marla would sidestep them to please her friends.

Why then did Marla allow Fawny to force beetroot on her?

Of course, Marla knew that beets were an excellent source of minerals and vitamins for long term health. What she didn't know was that too much of it would cause her a severe medical condition. She already suffered from gallbladder problems.

The other ingredients Fawny added to mask the smell and taste seemed harmless. So Marla became a regular consumer of beetroot soup.

The day Marla was admitted into the hospital didn't feel harmless.

Lying in that cold room staring at the walls, Marla had ample time to dissect the harm that allowing others to dictate her life could bring. That thick soup almost cost me my life, she lamented to herself.

She lay a week in the hospital. Numerous tests conducted. Overdosing from beetroot soup sounded like a bad nightmare. A laughable one if it were not so serious for someone with her medicaal conditions.

Marla was sicker than she knew.

But she didn't want to call her mother. She could hear her reprimands in her tone and see the utter disappointment and disgust on her face.

So she called her dad.

All she needed at that moment was someone to rub her hand and tell her everything would be fine.

Simplemente no podía decir "no".

Wow, that's an excellent story with a wise lesson. We have to stand our ground and do what we know is best for us even if it means a confrontation.

Yes, we certainly do. Others sometimes may think they know what is best for us. However, when it comes one's health, you have to refuse treatments or suggestions that may have adverse effects if an illness is not known or allergic reactions. Friends may have good intentions. But you have to think twice before taking advice in the medicinal area.

Thanks so much for visiting. I'm pleased you found my story interesting. I appreciate your kind words and support.

Take care and have a good start to the weekend.

Oh, YIKES ... well, beets are indeed powerful, and when one goes against one's instincts saying NO to please people, bad things can happen even with relatively harmless things...

Often others may not understand fully a person's underlying medical issues or food allergies. Well-meaning friends with good intentions can end up causing serious harm.

Also, an attitude adjustment is needed to combat the "can't say no" syndrome.

Thanks so much for your visit and engagement. I appreciate the support.

Take care.
