His last stop for the night. With thirty minutes to spare, from the corner of his eye, Jorge spotted a young woman's frantic gestures. She stood on the edge of the curb. Behind her, neon lights atop one of the local nightclubs flashed in unison.

Applying the blinker, he checked, then moved quickly into the right-hand lane.

No sooner had he stopped, the young woman, he guessed no older than twenty-five, stumbled as she stepped from the curb. He flipped open the back-door lock just as her hands flew toward the window to break her fall.

Her dress typical of a party goer. Waist-length bronze hair shimmered, exposing purple highlights. A bright, perky face with blushed a crimson rouge with lipstick to match. Her furrowed brow suggested a long night. Perhaps tired and upset that her efforts didn't bring in the anticipated rewards.

At least he hoped that was the situation in play.

A familiar spot, the lower West district. A hotbed for suspicious activity he'd come to recognize these past ten years. Of all the expressions displayed on the various clients' faces frequenting the strip, they faded into the background. Except perhaps for the obvious newcomers. Their motives for visiting were questionable. Their activities while there undoubtedly scrupulous.

Looking through the right side mirror, Jorge didn't anticipate what happened next.

From out of nowhere, a slightly older man dressed in black approached the young lady from behind and shoved her inside the car. Initially, Jorge thought nothing of it. Thinking the man was her companion from earlier in the evening and only desired to assist her entering the taxi.

She didn't protest as he pushed her deep inside the car toward the left passenger side, then entered himself and slammed the door hard. Avoiding the mirror, he stared at the outside activity.

Jorge didn't usually ask, and it wasn't his job. But he sensed a bit of information might be required later as he turned the radio even lower.

"Did you have a good evening, Ms...? And where to?" He hoped she was sober enough to understand his inquiry.

"The name's Jenna. And, it was on fire. I was turnt. Thanks for asking, sir." Her glossy eyes predicted the slurred words.

Jorge was now convinced Jenna was not a usual, just as he was convinced the man now sitting in the taxi didn't accompany her to the club.

"Too much information you're giving." The man continued his conversation, this time lowering his voice.

"Jenna, is your boyfriend traveling the same route as you? Jorge waited.

"He's not my boyfriend," she blurted quickly.

"You'd best be on your way, sir. The lady has an appointment." Jorge adjusted his mirror in the direction of the stranger.

"Take care of your business in the front. I've got this." The venom in the man's voice permeated the backseat air, but Jenna's reaction puzzled Jorge.

"He's not so bad once you get to know him," she exclaimed laughing before her voice trailed off. Confused, Jorge thought momentarily that his interpretation of their connection may have been incorrect.

Returning to his family after each nightly shift was Jorge's primary goal. Many contractors lost their livelihood and their lives entangling themselves in others' issues, sometimes caused by their own volition. But the face of his two teen daughters flooded his mind.

Jorge detected the slick, practiced, and persuasive words he'd become familiar with roll effortlessly off the grifter or hustler's tongue. The longer he talked, the scenario the man proposed wouldn't end well for unsuspecting Jenna. Jorge hoped she didn't already understand.

The tone of the stranger's coercive voice rose slightly, sending shivers through Jorge. Just as he thought.

From the backseat, for a moment, Jorge caught sight of a small, flat, shiny object flashing in the dark.

It was as if Jenna suddenly arose from a dream. Her loud intake of breath, scream, then shuffling of her hands and feet in an attempt to distance herself from the guy, startled Jorge. Was she placed under the influence earlier in the evening?

And why would someone act viciously in front of a witness? he thought.

Hitting the brake hard, the car stopped suddenly, jerking Jenna and the hustler forward. Jorge hated to take this drastic action, but didn't know if the man possessed another, more dangerous weapon and thought it was the only way to catch the him off guard.

Jorge dialed emergency, then jumped from the vehicle. He ran to the passenger side where Jenna sat and swung open the door. He jerked Jenna out of the passenger seat and directed her toward the walkway.

Passersby paused, trying to decide whether to intervene. Jorge yelled loudly into the crowd, "someone help us, I've called the police!"

The hustler pushed open the opposite side door and jumped out. Jorge didn't see him for few minutes until he stood up as if he'd fallen to the pavement. He then gathered himself quickly, crossed the street in the honking horns of oncoming traffic, and ran off in the opposite direction.

Jorge turned to Jenna who was now shaking and crying profusely. Streaks of rouge and mascara mixed with tears and drained down her face. He gathered her into his arms and tried to calm her.

"Everything will be alright now. He's gone. Authorities are on the way." Trying to reassure her, Jorge was again surprised when she backed away from him, shaking her head as though bringing the authorities into the situation was unwise.

Jorge took note and shook his head in return. He understood.

"I hope you wake up, Jenna, see through beyond this night, and perhaps choose an alternate lifestyle, else one day, God forbid, it may be your last ride."

"Me llamo Jenna. Y, estaba ardiendo. Estaba girada.

Yo me encargo".

What an intriguing story filled with suspense! I was on the edge of my seat hoping Jenna and Jorge come out of this dangerous situation unharmed at least.

Jorge is a brave character and his situation serves an eye-opener to some dangers cab drivers face especially at night. I wonder what Jenna's story is and how she came to be involved with the mean stranger. I admire Jorge's bold move to protection Jenna. I'm sure thoughts of his teenage daughters propelled him.

Let's hope Jorge's final words to Jenna becomes the wake-up call she needs! Gripping. Well done. !PIMP 😊

Hello @kemmyb. Check out Jenna's story in Part 2. She's quite a character. Her story is not unique, but rather sad in a societal kind of way. Jorge is a loving father who sees in Jenna his two daughters. I believe that's the reason he cares what happens to Jenna. Also, in his profession, he's probably seen all manner of men. He probably knows bullies will retreat once confronted.

But it's Jenna's reaction that floors him. A person can reach out to another. It's how the help is received that determines the outcome.

Thanks so much for your visit and kind compliment. I'm happy to hear you liked my story.

Take care and stay safe. I understand COVID is on the rise in the U.S., but the word isn't spreading quickly enough so that people begin to protect themselves more after letting their guard down this past two years.

You are absolutely right! It's like the saying that a person can take a horse to the river but can't force it to drink from it. Very realistic.

Thanks for the information on the covid situation. Many people believed this phase of our lives is over hence letting down their guards. We must be more careful. Take care and stay safe too. 💕 !LADY

Such an intriguing story. I was so invested. Although, I wished more than anything that Jorge would survive it, even more than the girl. But it's good that they both got out unscathed.

Jorge is so brave for risking his life to try to rescue the situation. I do know that these things. Ladies in unlikely situations by their own making is rampant but I'm glad this one was at least saved.

Beautiful story. I enjoyed every line.🌺

Hello @jhymi. So good of you to visit. I appreciate it and your lovely compliment for my story. I'm pleased it held your interest. The story reminds me that everyone is different. The choices they make determine their path in life, good or bad.

Jenna's circumstances before that fateful day she met Jorge is a secret she seems to be unwilling to divulge. Jorge sees in her the likeness of his daughters, and only want the best for her life. The advice he imparts to her is solid. Whether she takes it is another chapter.

Please read Part 2 to understand Jenna's mindset and how Jorge resolves their encounter.

Thanks so much for your support and engagement. I truly appreciate it. Take care and have a good weekend ahead.

It's a special thing in us when we care for each other the way we see that Jodge who is taking care of her a lot and keeping her out of trouble is called love.

Yes, @djbravo. Jorge is a special man. Perhaps because he has two daughters of his own. I feel as though he genuinely cares for people. He risked his life to try to save the young girl from harm by the violent guy. I hope she appreciates it.

If you read PART 2, you will see how the situation resolves itself.

Thanks for your visit and support. Take care.

Well, Jodge really tried his best and I love the fact that he tried to protect Jenna even though he could not do more than that
This is a lesson that we should be careful of strangers and also free rides

We don't know Jenna's history or her connect to the man. She exhibits the habits of a disturbed young woman who obviously needs help.

In PART 2 of the story, her own history becomes more clear.

Thanks so much for your visit. I'm pleased you found the story interesting.

Take care and have a good weekend.

Thanks for spotlighting my freewrite story. Appreciate the support.
