"Dad, the bus is late!" Ronnie yelled as he ran back into the house. He tossed his backpack onto the kitchen counter and helped himself to another round of his mother's tasty breakfast since his dad hadn't touched. Silence waffled through the house. Finished eating, he rushed upstairs to his father's home office and swung open the door.

Ronald, Sr. breathed deeply before swiveling his chair. His hand flew to his mouth to indicate quiet. Ronnie didn't mean to interrupt, but he couldn't wait. Quickly, he scribbled a note and held it in front of his dad's face.

"Damn," Ronald uttered, then muted his speaker. Wiping his forehead several times, his hand gesture indicated his son should retreat. Ronnie complied, easing the door shut.

Ronald had to think and quickly.

It was his turn to conduct their company's quarterly production meeting. He had already missed the last two rotations. He couldn't postpone it again this year. It would interfere with other members' schedules. Asking someone to cover wasn't appropriate. Twice in the past six months was too often. But some situations were unavoidable.

He unmuted his speaker and paused for a moment. Deciding to tell the truth, he explained his emergency, apologized profusely, and asked whether anyone would object to rescheduling. To his surprise, he didn't detect any facial expressions or heard any comments that indicated displeasure in canceling the meeting.

Dependability was key in his position. He figured working at home would solve some of his family problems. He didn't factor in external problems that would affect his ability to work at home worry free.

The bus still hadn't arrived. The second time in three months.

Like his early schedule, his wife's work hours and early commute across town left only enough time to prepare breakfast. That left him to ensure their son made it school safely. He couldn't operate with this uncertainty.

Ronnie talked on a variety of subjects before they pulled into the school drop-off zone. "I love you, dad. I know your busy, so I'll try not to be a bother again. Thanks for stopping work to bring me to school."

He slammed the car door and caught up with his classmates.

Pensive, Ronald alternated pursing and biting his lip contemplating the transportation situation at his son's school. That he would address the bus being late again was certain. But no time like the present. He parked in the visitors lot, then headed inside to discover the reason for the bus not arriving on time.

Returning to his car, he sat with his hands on the steering wheel.

Happiness and anger fought for attention. His son's words left him humbled and cheerful. The school bus situation left him fuming. He understood the bus driver's dilemma. But it affected numerous parents' well-planned schedules. If he and his wife experienced problems, what of single parents who didn't have a contingency plan.

A new perspective he gained remembering a co-worker complaining recently about his family situation. His ex-wife was pressuring him to purchase a car for their sixteen year old son to relieve the stress of her work schedule. The issue wasn't on his priority list. However, his ex-wife wouldn't relent.

Now, he understood.

Ronald pondered on the things in life that were a necessity. Employment was a necessity. A harmonious family life was a necessity to keep your work life afloat. A stable environment and an education was necessity for children's growth and future life. And, reliable transportation was a necessity.

He requested and received the rest of the day off. Before returning home, he messaged his wife.

"The bus was late again. We need to decide on transportation for Ronnie else I'll be starting over in a new job with only a few years left to fully prepare for college."

He then asked whether she required any items from the grocers. He was determined to make life easier on them. He realized his part in their family's function was lagging. Working at home meant more than just being there with no other responsibilities. Instead of waiting for his wife to leave work, shop for groceries, then tend to their family needs was a bit one sided.

Returning home, Ronald decided that in six months, he would begin serious driving lessons with his son after obtaining his learner's permit. He already spotted a satisfactory vehicle. He also hoped the bus would not be late again before his other plan was put in motion.

A win-win situation for all.

Hello @kemmyb. Yes, every parent has faced can identify with at least some of issues related to unreliable transportation during some point in their lives. A solid plan of foresight is often required to alleviate the stress.

The ratio of fathers who take responsibility for children is not the same as mothers. It takes them stepping into the alternate role to see the challenges women face every day without complaint. You do what you have to do with what you have to work with. It's not easy when you have have responsibility by yourself.

I appreciate your kind words for my story and am pleased you found it of interest.

Take care.
