Hoping fresh air would help, Wayland stepped through the church's back entrance and away from the wedding crowd, distancing himself from the conversation.

His hands shook as smoke rose, then evaporated. as he wished the bride would.

To his reason, the cost of her wedding ring shouldn't be the focus for the occasion.

That same ring, as best man, he'd swore to protect.

He'd tried to warn Emory. The rumors and his own doubts intensified during the months as his year-long engagement ended in a proposal.

But Emory was in love. Wayland had no choice but to support him.

Turning to re-enter, suddenly, an armed man grabbed Wayland, covered his mouth, then upended his legs so that he met the concrete with force.

Remembering the ring, Wayland clutched his vest.

The assailant noticed. Tearing at Wayland's pockets, the wallet, watch, and ring were stolen.

With no time to think, Wayland yelled loudly. He threw punches. He grabbed the assailant and attempted to bring him down to no avail. The man was taller and stronger.

In a flash, the assault ended. The assailant disappeared down the street, leaving Wayland weak, bleeding from the head, and in shock. He couldn't believe this occurred in daylight.

The church's security guard, together with several of the male guests attending the wedding filed out of the church into its rear area. Horrified, they were concerned Wayland would need emergency assistance.

He assured the guest he wasn't seriously hurt, just shaken up. However, scratches on his forehead and hands were evident.

He didn't believe the robber had a weapon. At least he wasn't assaulted with one. Why the robber targeted him weighed heavily on his mind.

Emory and his other groomsmen assisted Wayland to the men's room. He insisted he wasn't injured. The last thing he wanted was to disrupt his best friend's wedding.

The event outside the church took center stage. The wedding party and guests were deeply affected as they inquired about Wayland.

No one at the wedding but Emory knew the wedding ring was among the items stolen.

"I'll replace the ring." Wayland was hurt and embarrassed.

"Don't worry, it's insured. I'm just happy you weren't seriously harmed."* His calmness surprised Wayland. He knew explaining to Gabrielle wouldn't go as smoothly. He wished he didn't have to.

The authorities were called, and the incident reported.

The wedding was delayed with Wayland assuring Emory he wouldn't require medical attention. Finally convincing everyone he could proceed, he was taken to a part of the church to rest.

But they had a wedding to continue. And Wayland was adamant he wouldn't be the cause of the disruption.

However, Wayland was more concerned that his carelessness caused the loss of the wedding ring. He knew how ridiculously expensive it was and Emory's persistence in purchasing it for Gabrielle. The fact he couldn't afford it together with the wedding expenses was a topic they decided not to discuss any further for the sake of their friendship.

Of them all, he knew Gabrielle would be the most furious.

However, all this happened without her knowledge. Waiting to be escorted inside to take her place next to her fiance, she would have a wedding surprise.

Emory was adamant that Gabrielle not be informed. He didn't want to ruin their day.

Two hours later, with his head and hands bandaged, Wayland took his place next to the other groomsmen.

All guests quieted down. The wedding proceeded.

Gabrielle joined Emory, ready to be married in an exquisite ball gown.

Emory paused, looking Gabrielle in the eyes. "Would you marry me without the ring?"

Gabrielle's eyes widened as her elaborately decorated eyelashes followed.

A hush fell over the crowd awaiting her answer.

For what seemed like hours, Gabrielle took a deep breath. She motioned for her bridesmaid to bring her the written vow, then asked for a pen.

Emory waited patiently as she hurriedly wrote the words "without a ring".

The ceremony began.

"I understand we don't have a bride's ring today. I've been asked to omit the exchange of the rings."

Emory started to cry, as did many of the females in the crowd. He didn't know that one of the guests had already told her about the incident.

Emory spoke. "If anyone here doubts our love, today is a sign that I'm the luckiest man alive. My best man and friend defended the ring with his life. My fiance agreed to marrying me without it."

Wayland stood now with tears in his eyes, thinking, I was wrong about Gabrielle.

Había intentado advertir a Emory.

At least he wasn't assaulted with one.
