Tiny bumps formed into chills as Samantha sat, back razor straight, in the chair next to her doctor's desk. "Relax. Don't worry needlessly," he ordered while cupping her hand. "The tests will tell us more and pinpoint the area we should focus on." But his words flew over her head and bounced against the window as though attempting to break free and find a solution outside the clinic's walls. Her gaze followed them, searching for reassurance, but only bitter chill of the first winter freeze slammed her in the face.

Like a deer caught in headlights, Samantha walked numb from the doctor's office down the escalator to her car.

The ride home felt like a vacuum sucking her into life's void where no rhythm or reason existed. Unable to breath, she pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant near her home. She couldn't tell whether her hands shook from the biting cold. She hurried from the car and ran inside the cafe, ordered a hot coffee, and sat in a booth near the window.

"Please come, I need you here," Samantha pleaded in a weak voice once her sister answered.

Samantha would have pushed back the appointment had it not been for her sister's adamant urging on the other end of the phone. "I'm unable to request time off with this week with the late notice, but I'll fly out the middle of next week."

"I can't..." Samantha stammered, "do this with you".

"Samantha! Stop it! You Can and Will do this. Your procrastination more than anything will be the death of you! If your doctor pulled arranged to secure you an immediate test tomorrow, then you'd better go." We'll deal with the results later. It's only us, so listen. I'll get there as soon as I can in a few days, but will call you tomorrow and every day until I arrive. We'll talk face to face tonight. I'm in a meeting. I love you. Talk later."

She hung up and stared out the coffee shop's window without noticing the first snowflakes of the season. Her stomach churned, allowing for only another cup of black decaf.

She chided herself for the decision she made last year.

She kept secret the fact that she pushed her screening last year back and ignored notices, until she forgot it. Several months later, she read an article online indicating that an annual exam was only recommended in some instances. Patients could opt to switch to every other year. She breathed easier reading that family history or experiencing current problems was cause for alarm and urgency.

That night, Samantha's emotional agony resulted in only a few hours sleep.

That she'd be groggy the rest of the day was assured. Dressing hurriedly, she rushed out and headed toward the clinic.

The patient waiting room. How eerily quiet it felt while Samantha walked down the long hall after being called for her turn. In the distance, whispers followed admonishing her decision to delay visiting the clinic until today. Yanking her head, clinic staff glanced up with puzzled looks.

"This way to the dressing room," the technician who would be in charge of conducting the test instructed her. "Changing rooms are on the left. Leave your clothes in one of the lockers. Lock it and bring your key. You can wait here. I'll be back shortly."

The instructions crumbled in Samantha's head as whispers grew. Her older sister's voice rang the loudest.

Finished undressing and changing into a gown, she approached the lockers. To her dismay, several were out of order. She finally located one that worked. After placing her belongings inside, she turned to find three other patients already sitting in the waiting area around the corner. She tightened her gown, then eased into a seat away from other patients.

She glanced at other patients. Lack of conversation probably meant they were worried about the outcome of their procedure, she surmised. One by one, other patients rose as attendants opened the door and invited them into the area where the imaging was conducted.

Left alone with only her thoughts, various outcomes that might be detected chased each other. The imaging preparation and ultimate procedures were foreign.

"Samantha Howlett," the technician announced in a soft voice as she searched the room.

Samantha rose quickly from the chair with no other thought than ensuring her gown didn't leave any part of her body exposed. While under the imaging machine, she tried to calm her nerves.

"We're done. Return to the waiting area, but don't get dressed in case we need more images. And don't forget your key," the clinician explained.

Samantha nodded. She reached for the key on the table, but it wasn't visible. "Where is it?"

"Perhaps you left it in the locker?"

She rushed from the exam room. From one end to the other, she scoured the locker area. Suddenly, she couldn't remember the locker number as numerous keys were inserted into the various keyholes.

She noticed another patient had arrived.

"Have you seen a key laying around?"

"What? No," she thought the lady responded dryly, then continued reading her magazine.

For a moment, she forgot about the test and its possible results. She searched all open lockers, to no avail. The key was not in her line of sight. Frantic, her eyes appeared damp and slightly bright as her hand flew to her temple. Think, Samantha, think, a tiny voice inside encouraged.

Finally, she remembered entering the ladies room. She dashed toward the facilities. In the second ladies room, there was the key laying on the sink. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply. She grabbed the key and walked briskly back to the locker she'd chosen for her belongings.

Her items stared back as though wondering what the commotion was about. Exhausted, she leaned against the locker. Samantha forgot the instructions and removed her clothes to change.

As she was about to enter the dressing room, her name rang out. The technician recalled her to the exam room for additional images. Her pulse quickened.

She couldn't wait to leave the clinic. All she could do was make it back home. Immediately, she called her sister to reconstruct the harrowing day.

It was one she would never forget. The outcome of the test would be dealt with, her sister assured her.

Samantha now had a basis for her yearly checkup. She promised herself and her sister that she would never miss another appointment or her monthly self-check exams at home.

"No puedo..." Samantha tartamudeó, "hacer esto contigo".

"¡Samantha!

Samantha's was a nervous wreck, which is understandable because the outcome of the test results is not known.

Yes, she was really worried about her upcoming test. It's so important for individuals, especially women, to have regular checkups so nothing will be missed.
