It was November 10. An ordinary day to anyone else. But to Catrina and her cousin, Harvey, eating breakfast at the small table reserved for children in the family, the shared day of their birth was something novel. The only two members of their large family that were born on the same day. And, the only day of significance in their lives worth celebrating these past ten years.

It was also worthy to note that these two were cousins and not twins.

"Do you know what today is?" Uncle Homer pronounced as he strode into the kitchen, leaned over the stove and grabbed five sausage patties, five slices of bacon, and three biscuits, then scooped up two sunny side eggs and threw them onto his plate.

For some reason, today must have been one in which he was in a hurry.

The cousins had to wait several minutes longer for their uncle to reveal the answer to his question. He devoured the meal as though it were a fresh kill for predators that aired on Animal Kingdom every Thursday night before their bedtime.

Catrina looked at Harvey with a suppressed laugh as though expecting Uncle Homer was deliberately delaying the "happy birthday" wishes. Unable to hold it any longer, a loud giggle erupted.

Uncle Homer, as though realizing a hidden prompt by the agitated state of the youngsters, paused from eating, before continuing. "Oh, an important day for me. We'll have guests for dinner tonight to help me celebrate. I'm away to the office, so help your auntie prepare for my big surprise. Great things are happening in my life, so don't mess things up for me you two troublemakers."

The two had long since stopped waiting for him to wash his hands after eating. They sat their numb as he grabbed his suit coat, then slammed the door on his way out.

Feeling deflated, they both frowned, dropped their forks, then took a big gulp of milk.

It wasn't the first time disappointment visited them. Living with Aunt Celeste was comfortable. Uncle Homer, not so much.

Catrina and Harvey obeyed orders. While Harvey vented his frustration on the rug with a large stick, Catrina polished the stemware.

Who said birthdays were special. Fun. Exciting. The occasion to receive unexpected gifts and showered with beautiful sentiments inside greeting cards, and ending with overwhelming hugs and kisses, Harvey wondered.

Having shared his disappointment once more. Catrina accepted hers once more. Both tended to their duties in silence, their hearts filled with longing.

No sooner than their initial chores were completed, a loud knock at the door interrupted Aunt Celeste's thoughts on how her niece and nephew's cleaning skills could be best utilized.

Aunt Celeste answered. A tall, burly man with a mustache queried her for almost five minutes before handing her a letter.

It wasn't a moment later that Harvey was happy that he'd dusted the mite-infested rug as it was about to catch Aunt Celeste as she fainted.

A tall, burly man hands Aunt Celeste a letter and she faints! Oh, how you leave your readers on the edge of this cliffhanger. I'm thoroughly intrigued by the content of the letter.

Uncle Homer seems like a mischievous character who enjoys a hearty meal in the morning. I wonder what he's up to and why he wants to be celebrated on the same day as Harvey and Catrina. This is an interesting story and you capture the emotions of the characters and the dynamics of the family very well.

Finally, we meet Catrina! 😄 I'm looking forward to the continuing part. Take care and have a wonderful weekend. !PIMP

Yes, Catrina has surfaced in her rightful story. She and her cousin, Harvey, appear to be resourceful ten-year olds with hopes of having a surprise for their birthday. It's refreshing to see them not be upset, throwing a tantrum over it not happening yet. Instead, they reflect on their lives, especially about their disappointments.

The mystery man who comes with news that shocks their loving Aunt. And what is the self-absorbed Uncle Homer up to? An odd extended family mix for sure. I wonder how did Catrina and Harvey come to live with their aunt and uncle? Another mystery in the works.

Family dynamics are a mystery sometimes. It's how the situations are handled and resolved.

Thanks so much for your visit and lovely compliment.

Take care and have a good start to your week.
