Bethany, Horace, and Mechim reached for the cards. Immediately, they pulled back their hands then shook off the hurt Professor Galaxious generously applied to their knuckles. His favorite stick was widely known. Some might question the necessity of the tool. All knew intimidation was its ultimate goal. Fairness in all things wielded by the promise of correction if out of line.

They stepped back at his admonition. "What was that for?" They all shrieked in unison.

No longer his high school students, this group was now in secondary education. They chuckled, remembering their ordinary school days. Their science professor was anything but ordinary. It was either his way, or no way would they be allowed to travel off grid.

Glancing at the numerous books, magazines, and artifacts housed in their former professor's home library, they knew his genius was not limited to the classroom. Few people, however, were given the opportunity to explore his collection. So, his universal exploratory knowledge was a safely-guarded secret.

"Have you forgotten? One at a time, and ladies first! Now, let try this again." Professor Galaxious was indeed out of this world.

The group laughed as each one took turns extracting a hand-written numbers on white sheets of paper. Briefly, they glanced at the numbers before the papers over to the professor.

Waving his stick, the group followed him around the room.

While their backs were turned, the library shelf revolved 360 degrees. Stopping briefly on the opposite side, a cloud of yellow and orange dust particles with white vapors circling in the middle appeared.

Bethany, Horace, and Mechim couldn't help but fall back art the burst of energy flung in their direction.

"Dive in one at a time. I'll be right behind you." The Professor frowned, waiting for his proteges. He wasn't disappointed. He knew the dangers they faced. But he was certain curiosity was the driving force behind their friendship.

The three young adults glanced at each other. Afraid to plunge into the unknown first, Horace stepped further back.

The Professor extended both hands. Without a word, all three youngsters grabbed hold.

Into the depths of the particle storm they all descended.

Landing in another era, they stood up with questioning eyes. The room looked the same. The bookcase looked the same, but the books were new with a fresh scent. The Professor twirled his stick.

Again, the bookcase opened. "Follow me," he ordered.

Behind the bookcase, the wooden bannister creaked. Down the staircase and around a tall, large granite pillar, Professor led his friends. He tapped on the stone with his stick.

Now it was just a matter of locating the correct coordinates. They each pulled out their unique messages and held them up to the stone pillar.

They fell onto the grassy knoll.

No warning that the new environment would not require winter attire, each undressed down to the bare essentials as sweat gathered under all parts of their bodies where sweat could possibly form.

Blinding light from the orbit increased temperatures. They hid their clothing, then gathered at one spot.

"Where to and what's the assignment?" Bethany shouted.

"If you're ready to save our world, let me show you what you're up against. Each of you had a hand and were the deciding factor in the downfall of our future society by your past choices. You neglected the warnings and forged ahead."

The horror of knowing they each changed the future in some way brought chills to their spines. They shuddered, then huddled together and prayed, "Let us redeem ourselves for our future."

Peering through the factory windows, replicas being massed produced lined the isles. Mechim jerked a sharp breath. "But that thesis paper was only for fun. I never imagined it could be applied in this type modeling."

Both Bethany and Horace traced the outlines of the bodies until they located models of themselves.

"No way, they both whispered. This is a nightmare. Professor is trying to dissuade us from delving into third generation artificial intelligence."

But it was the black depths of the eyes that stared back at the young adults that convinced them the future was real.

"Your AI research and implementation produced the cyborg models society overwhelmingly adopted. Limited personalities to deal with. Now, there are only three different types of people who survived the machine war," Professor explained.

A new world.

All three young adults shrunk down from the window. No time to process the implications of their brilliant careers ahead of them, they hurriedly retreated to the place where they hid their clothing.

Out of breath, they sank down near a tree. Professor explained his research. Each of the cards they extracted from the him contained the coding sequence they developed.

He could have just given them the information. They would have laughed, thinking him senile.

"All individuals whose personalities do not fit within each of your parameters with be extinguished. They pose alternate views that do not enhance society's goal of one world thinking within limited parameters. It's all about control. It's time to return." He gave them a few moments to reflect.

Silent now, the Professor watched as his young proteges, with their heads hung low, donned their clothing. They set out to find the enemy.

They discovered the enemy was themselves.

Profesor Galaxious

"¿Lo has olvidado?

No estaba decepcionado.

I can't help thinking these ideas had to be government-approved. If those three different characters were best friends the world could be at peace. I wonder what their characters and skills are.

🍀💕

Definitely government-approved. The theses for their future science careers catapult them into the direction of cybernetics and related fields.

Thanks for your visit. I appreciate it. Have a wonderful rest of your week.

"We have met the enemy, and it is us" turned into a staggering story -- EXCELLENT.

Progress can't advance until human input, whether right or wrong. Only time will tell for the direction we choose.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I appreciate it and your kind compliment for my story. Have a wonderful rest of your week and weekend.

This story also pertains to what is happening in the world. If we decide to make some findings about the problems that do many people are facing, we would realize that we ourselves are the problem.

Yes, the story does relate to the ongoing research and discovery going on in the world today. Areas such as artificial intelligence research and how it can be applied to humanity is an ongoing debate. Hopefully creating and designing machines will not interfere with the advancement of humans as we know them.

Thanks so much for your visit. I appreciate it.

Take care.
