The date was set. The hour drew near. They shuddered at the risk. They rejoiced at the reward. On the last night before the plan was to take effect, the enthusiastic conspirators met to finalize details of the revolt.

Of course this was disloyalty in the highest ranks. Soldiers hand selected by the king himself, they knew full well the penalty for treason. His endless tirades embedded into their souls the consequences of moving against him and the kingdom.

Was it worth the sacrifice knowing not only they, but their families, would suffer. To be set free from tyranny, a unanimous and resounding "Yes" whenever they gathered.

But their families were set to flee once the signal was delivered.

Their fearless commander was Jorge. Captain of the guard. Organizer of the revolt. The King's confidant. Met with skepticism in the beginning, this suave and persuasive court gentleman convinced the agitators the time was right for a change of leadership.

Across the grassy knoll, on the edge of the kingdom, Alexander and his men waited in his cellar. Huddled together, their task was to finalize details of the secession. But Jorge had been held up. An emergency at court.

"Unfortunate events. Apologies for the delay. The King couldn't find his head if it wasn't attached." They laughed, agreeing with Jorge, unaware that his eyes canvassed each of them under cloak of weariness attending to the King.

Ensuring no suspicions had risen, he began rehearsing the final details of the revolt. Alexander glanced toward the end of the table, admiring their leader.

Two days later at dawn, Jorge sent word to Alexander.

With the conspirators behind him, Alexander and his men stormed the outer gate of the castle. As promised by Jorge, the gate was unlocked. Entering the courtyard, Alexander and his men stood in the center of the palace grounds ready for the surprise attack.

Jorge had promised a small unit of men Alexander's force could easily overcome. The rest were away Instead, an eerie, ghost-like feeling met them as their eyes flew wide with shock.

Immediately, hundreds of loyal soldiers in the King's army, rushed forth into the gates. Alexander and his men were forced to lay down their weapons.

Jorge was nowhere to be found. His deviation from the plan meant a death sentence for the conspirators and their families. Not only that, they suddenly realized that they had been betrayed by their friend and commander.

What was his ulterior motive from the start? What would he gain? Alexander and his men pondered this while locked in the dungeons.

Punishment day. The day of reckoning for those found not loyal to King Cutthroaty would be deal with appropriately. Tolerating rebellion with a significant loss of his men, King Cutthroaty could not afford.

Six men stood upon the platform, a guillotine above each their heads. The rest waited their turn behind the platform. They glanced up toward the King's station.

There sitting in the balcony with the ruthless dictator, Jorge was adorned in fine linens and wore the badge that acknowledged to all his loyalty to the kingdom.

The Hand of the Crown.

Jorge rose. Waiving to the crowd, he ordered silence. His assistant handed him the scroll. He smiled as he read the names of his former comrades. Alexander and his men stood silent, heads high in the air.

A black mood descended upon the accused as pinched faces, frigid features, and mouths twisted into sneers. Then baring their teeth, each took turns spitting in front of them, as if Jorge were standing there. Some cursed as rage-filled voices permeated the crowd who shrunk back out of fear.

Immediately after, Jorge signaled to the Executioner. The beheadings commenced.

Men, women, and children stood frozen, some with hands to their faces sobbing, as one after the other, heads rolled from the guillotine platform onto the courtyard. A warning to all.

In the crowd was one who pulled a hood over his face, then looked up into the King's balcony. In that moment, his fate was decided. On his lips was the name he gave for the sacrifice of Alexander, his friend and mentor.

The Guiltless Resistance.

He would take his place. He would spread the word. He would not return home. His path was now set.

He could not stomach sitting at the dinner table, listening to the man he once desired to emulate when he grew to adulthood in a few years.

The traitor, now the Hand of the Crown.

No volvería a casa.

Hmm
Anyone who is not loyal to the King cannot even live in that type of village but don't we think it is weird to behead people who are not loyal to the King? Why not leave or punish them instead of beheading them?
That's too much!
Nice story!

That was the punishment during that time period. A major deterrent to crime and betrayal. I'm pleased you liked my story. The group trusted its leader only to find out he betrayed them. This led to their deaths.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I'm pleased you liked my story. Take care.
