I don't know how it all started or when. The silence, I mean. I know that I liked living in my house, and now the fun doesn't live there with me any longer. Even my stuffed animals can't make me laugh. I asked my older cousin, Oskur about adults. He told me that if I watched a certain television program, I would see how adults act when they really like each other. Why would he say that?

Of course, my mom told me I was too young for that television show.

I wasn't allowed to watch the program, so I told Oskur. He just laughed and shook his head. He wouldn't tell me much else. That's when the funny feeling in my stomach rose up. Now that I think about it, at ten, he wasn't much older than I, so he probably didn't know either. And at nine year's old, I wasn't paying that much attention to grown up business.

Recently, whenever we go on an outing, my mom wears sunglasses. Even if the sun is not shining. I guess she has to protect her eyes more than I need to.

When she thinks I'm not looking, tears form in the sides of her eyes. They don't fall like mine whenever I'm about to confess to trouble I've gotten myself into that I can't explain.

I may not know what happened to mom, but I know something has not been the same from I think a year ago. That's when we traveled out of state on summer vacation. The water park hotel was the best fun I had so far.

When we returned home, one day my dad picked me up from school. We traveled to the park in our neighborhood. He didn't talk much that day. He just gathered me up in a bear hug, then looked across the pond into the distance. He started to speak, then stopped.

He reached inside his shirt and pulled out a necklace. At its end, a small square box dangled. I lowered my head while he placed the necklace around my neck. Helping me open the box, a picture of just us smiling stared back me.

"Thanks, dad. I'll never take it off." I smiled while fidgeting with the box.

"You have my permission to do so when you bathe." His lips pursed in a funny gesture. We both laughed out loud.

I remember our hair blew in the cool wind, so we headed home.

Two weeks later, dad moved away from us.

"Why would dad leave us?" I asked, trying not to cry while looking directly into her eyes. Other questions spilled out all at once. It was time for me to learn about adult stuff.

"It was his choice, not mine. In life we all have choices to make. We must choose what makes us happy."

"But how do we know what makes us happy in life?" Playing with my stuffed animals and action figures, and ice cream cones was the only choices I knew to make me happy. And of course living with my mom and dad.

"Follow our heart. And listen to your gut instinct. When you're older, you'll learn about your instincts." My instinct was to talk to dad. I wanted to learn about his choices.

I longed to hear dad's answer. I didn't have to wait long. He came a week later to collect me for a visit with him. I asked if I all three of us could get ice cream from the mall.

They both agreed.

Barely able to sit still in the back seat, happiness spread inside as the locket pressed against my chest. We finally arrived. My eyes doubled in size the moment I spotted the double dipped chocolate ice cream cone.

We sat, then ordered my cone topped with sprinkles. Glancing around the shop, I spotted behind the booth a table holding two large desserts. This must be my lucky day. Chocolate crusted ice cream sundae was my mom's favorite. And, my dad's favorite, vanilla ice cream topped with fresh strawberries.

While I waited for my cone, memories of happy times around my cones, together with those desserts, popped into my thoughts.

An idea rose. Those two desserts sure did look like they could bring two people back together and solve all their problems.

At least I hoped so. I anxiously turned and beckoned to the waitress to hurry and bring one each of those identical desserts to our booth I pointed out sitting on that table across the way.

Aquel día no habló mucho.

"Sigue a tu corazón. Y escucha tu instinto.

Welcome back to my freewrite picture prompt story for this week.

Describe what you see.
In a mall, bicycles are secured in front of a shop. Other business are lined along the mall's walkway. Two large ice cream desserts sitting on a table. Two small glasses of water sit next to each dessert. One dessert is filled with ice cream and chocolate shell coating. The other dessert is filled with ice cream, strawberry topping, and fresh strawberries.

Three individuals who appears to be a family with two adults and one child is sitting in a booth across from the table containing the desserts. Other patrons appear to be leaving the ice cream shop.

Describe what you feel.
I feel as though the young boy is accompanying his parents to the dessert shop. Perhaps it is a special occasion. Perhaps not. The boy, looking intently at the ice cream sitting on a table in the next booth, longs for a dessert such as this, but can't decide which one. I feel the parents are in an intense conversation.

What a heartwarming story! You remind me of the innocence of children and how their perspectives don't go beyond what satisfies their heart (love of family) and their bellies. Sadly, the protagonist's family breaks up and he doesn't understand the reason for it.

In failed marriages, it's the children that suffer more which makes me understand why some parents would stay put (if they could) until the children are grown. I admire the protagonist's optimism and hope of bringing his parents together!

You tell this story beautifully through the eyes of a young child. Well done! Take care and have a wonderful day. 😊 !LADY

Thanks so much @kemmyb for your visit. I'm pleased you liked my story from a child's point of view. Yes, children rarely understands their parents' decision to separate.

In a way, I feel that the realm of a child's space is a sort of protection from the outside worldly adult knowledge.

I appreciate your kind compliment and support. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

Poor child ... no way to understand, but doing the best he can to find hope ... and MAYBE, just MAYBE, he's right ... when they see how they are hurting HIM ... a great cliffhanger!

Hopefully the parents can work out their issues. Talking to children and helping them understand is a good start. An extremely difficult situation has to exist when deciding to leave when children are involved. I don't feel that in all situations parents truly take the time to realize the effect separation and the next step, divorce, will have on children, opting to only focus on their own needs first. So many factors to consider.

Thanks for your visit. I appreciate the support.

Take care.

You do a great job of capturing the emotions of a child who is going through a difficult time. I can really feel the sadness, confusion, and hopefulness that the narrator is feeling.

Hello @malos10. Thanks for your visit. I'm pleased you like my story. I try to bring emotions to the forefront so that my readers can experience for themselves what the characters are feeling..

Yes, it is difficult for children to understand the breakup of their parents. All the emotions you describe are sometimes felt at different periods.

I appreciate your support.

Take care.

Let's hope Dad and Mom are willing to pay for what they did not order and there won't be a fight.
The best ice cream doesn't taste if you are in bad company and hurt.

Thank you for your entry.

I have a feeling that the parents will respect each other enough in front of their child to not make a scene in the mall. I also feel they will accept the order to make their son happy.

Things may not be ideal for parents to be in each other's company immediately after a breakup, but hopefully they can put their differences aside on occasions they have to interact with each other.

It will be a long endurance test until the child reaches 18 years old, and perhaps beyond, so they'd better learn to co-parent as soon as possible. And what better way than over ice cream. It may cool temperatures a bit.

Thanks for your visit. I appreciate it and your support. Take care and have a good start to your weekend.

The part that caught my attention most is how to know what makes us happy in life.
I believe that we all have tried different things so the one that makes us happy will be known by feeling happy anytime we do it

Yes, each of us must do what we feel will make us happy. Deciding to break the family unit is a major decision, so careful thought must be taken on that issue.

Thanks for your visit and support. I appreciate it.
