It was the pounding of the quarter-sized mounds that startled her. The howling winds tossed hail about her open-toed heels. Nadine jabbed at the larger ones that fell about her feet, attempting to carve a path on the sidewalk, but the rain quickly replaced them.

She turned instinctively, the decision to retreat into the comfort and safety of the small cafe and book shop her second choice.

Inside, patrons who recognized her watched, then continued their meals, while shaking their heads at the foolishness of anyone venturing out into the storm.

But she must not be late to garner the trophies reserved for her masterful portrayal of characters and skillful words.

"It's going to take lightning speed if we hope to make the reception dinner," Vincent said behind her.

He stepped away toward the edge of the sidewalk. Fumbling with the door, he managed to shield Nadine from the rain while she stepped inside. Stopping for a book signing on the way to a reception in her honor was his idea. Coals reaped upon his head would be dessert if he caused his employer to be one minute late.

Tail lights displaying solid red to the end of the block alerted him that even if they made it to their vehicle, it would take over an hour to move even a few blocks.

Switching on the radio, a flooding forecast in the area sent chills up his spine. He hadn't notice the weather had turned dangerous while inside the book shop.

"We'll have to take an alternate route. Street flooding ahead. In the evening's fading light, I won't be able to see driving through it." The dinner reception at the back of his mind, Nadine's frustration became visible.

"Let me make it explicit." The tone in her voice matched the venom in her eyes as Vincent stared into the overhead mirror.

He knew that phrase well and interrupted her. "I'm trying to save your life."

as if for the hundredth time in one way or the other."

"You won't be able to do that unemployed because you won't be working for me if I miss that reception in my honor."

Vincent turned the corner and continued on the safe route suggested by the weather forecaster.

Nadine's safety outweighed the late attention-seeking entry. The accolades that set her above others in her mind. The trophy she would receive that night. The photos she would miss with important individuals. And the potential to meet prominent publishing house executives.

His love for her saved her again.

I chuckled at Nadine's threat. Which is more important, personal ambition or her safety? Her decision to attend the reception is her choice but their arrival at the event in a raging storm should be her priority. I'm glad one of them is more sensible and that's Vincent.

There's a mention of Catrina in this story, is she another of Nadine's employees? Your vivid descriptions of the storm and characters' emotions make this story an interesting one. Nicely done! Take care and have a great day. !PIMP 💕

Catrina, why are you sticking your nose into Nadine's business? You belong in that other story yet to be published! lololol. Besides, you don't want to drown in a flood. You're more sensible than that! That's the only explanation I have for this mishap! Thanks for noticing and bringing it to my attention. I appreciate it.

Some people are misguided in their sense of reality. Nadine won't make it to the function to accept her award if she is met with a tragedy on the road. She's not alone in her thinking though as individuals can sometimes be self-centered and overlook danger in their path. Thank God her publicist and good friend had her well-being in mind.

Thanks so much for your visit and lovely compliment for my story. I appreciate it and your support.

!ALIVE

🤣🤣 No, we don't want Catrina to drown in Nadine's flood because we want to read her own story too! Hehe. When I saw the name, I guessed it was a typo.

Very good use of the theme and nicely plotted out with Nadine as the heroine saved by her Romeo.
