Our community garden is thriving and several members of our community has been harvesting stuff from it and it's making us very happy.
In the past, papa was the one who waters the community garden every afternoon, but now, our neighbor as well as the kids volunteered to water it. It's becoming more and more of a community garden. What I enjoy the most is the involvement of the kids. I'm delighted to see them enjoying it.
Last Wednesday afternoon, I was watering the plants outside our gate because papa had to go somewhere for a couple of days, so I took more breaks in the afternoon to help mama around. I saw some kids watering the community garden, so I decided to join them a bit and also take some photos.
They're taking turns in watering the plants in the garden. It was so fun to see them doing this community task. They also ended up playing and taking a bath afterwards. haha
Plants are growing well... but so are the weeds. lol
The tomatoes are becoming bigger... yaaay!!
More moringa leaves for everyone. Now, there are around 3-4 moringa plants with lots of leaves in the community garden.
The youngest kid during that time stayed by the gate. She's our guard. haha
The photos above were taken last Wednesday. It was enjoyable. And since I noticed the weeds are growing quite long, I asked them to tell the other kids and help me do some weeding on Saturday. I told them I'd prepare some snacks afterwards. They were so excited. I guess it's nice to reward these kids once in a while.
I'm also thinking of doing some weeding and treating them to some simple snacks at least twice a month... perhaps, every other weekend?
So, Saturday came and we did some weeding... before I did my part, I took some photos first. haha
These four came early to help. One kid who's very active in helping and her little sister who was our guard last time weren't around last Saturday though. They had to go somewhere with their mom.
They're so serious in their tasks, but they sometimes ask me questions about gardening and the plants we have in the garden.
We have a new guard that day, too. haha She's my goddaughter and she's so adorbs and talkative. haha
Later that afternoon, papa and Arashi also came to visit us.
Much later in the afternoon, more kids came. Mostly, we allowed the older kids to help because the much younger ones might take out the actual vegetables and not the weeds. hahah I couldn't take any more photos that time because I became busy as well.
The garden looks much better now. We just have to clean up the rest and we're done. Next up is our snack time.
Mama cooked some popcorn!
After washing their hands, we prepared a couple tables and placed a bunch of cheese-flavored popcorn. I also treated them with ice cream! Well, mama wanted to pay half of it, though. hahaha
They didn't finish the popcorn, so we asked them to get some containers from their house so they could each take home some... and they did. :)
Later that night, mama decided to get the lettuce which are quite old from our garden. We're planning to plant new lettuce and instead of having them rot, we harvested a bunch and gave some of them away that night.
These were our harvest that night. We cut them and washed them as well. Then, we gave them to maybe around 4-5 families in the community who we know love lettuce.
If I'm not mistaken, we were able to harvest from the same lettuce 3-4 times before it grows old and no longer produce leaves. We still have around 3-4 lettuce plants left in our backyard. We've harvested a lot and we also gave out some of them to our friends and other family members.
We haven't bought good soil for planting yet because the person who we usually buy some had some personal stuff to do. Hopefully, we could do more planting for our home garden by next weekend.
It was a very fun and productive Saturday afternoon for us in the community especially for the kids. Yesterday, Sunday, they also watered the plants in the community garden. I couldn't join them though because I got quite busy since my older cousin and younger cousin came to celebrate "Mother's Day" with us.
