Lovely Blooms with Lasting Scent - Frangipani (Plumeria)

Originates in Carribean Island and mainland of South America. It is endemic throughout Asia and India. Frangipani obtained its name from Italian nobleman Marquis Frangipani who invented a perfume used to scent gloves in the 16th century. Plumeria, on the other hand is named in honor of French monk and botanist Charles Plumier who gave an account about the beauty of this exotic flower in the 17th century.

This plant is very popular in Hawaii though this not a native of this state. It is introduced only in 1860.The people call it Pua Melia. The flowers are used in Hawaii as garlands or leis and it is also placed in the right and left ear to show the relationship status of the wearer. It it's in the right, the wearer is single and if it's in the left, she's taken already.

There are many hybrids species of this shrub which is mostly used as landscape plants in parks, gardens, patios because of its attractive colorful flowers, unique leaves and intoxicating scent. Plant lovers grow this plant in suitable container and place it in the home garden or terrace.

The flowers come in two or more colors on the same flower -- yellow, white, pink, salmon pink and red. The five petalled flowers dominate the large, elongated, glossy, green leaves. Other varieties have pointed foliage. The branches are grayish, brittle containing white sap that may cause eye and skin irritation.

Propagation of this plant is usually done through cuttings. The stem should be cut 10 centimeters and the leaves must be removed. Too much dipping in the potting medium will cause rot rotting. Watering is done weekly. If firmly rooted, it's ready to be transplanted. For a bountiful blooms, this plant should be under full sun, soil is sandy and water if the soil is dry. Use bloom fertilizer which means higher in phosphorous. Fish emulsion, an organic fertilizer may do so. Prune the plant as the need arises and avoid hard pruning.

Some of health benefits are the essential oils which is used for muscle pain, relieves fear and insomnia, good for hair and skin. In fact, there are resor and body spas using frangipani flowers for healing and rejuvenation.

There are countries who call this plant in different names and give different symbolisms. Some associate this plant with life, birth, beginnings, charm and beauty. Others associate this with ghosts, vampires, deaths, funerals, and graveyards.

In the Philippines, it is being called Kalacuchi and other Filipinos called it Karachucha. Before, it was associated with deaths, funerals, and cemeteries. Through the passage of years, that morbid thinking is being erased in the minds of the people.At this present time, it is well accepted by many as house and landscape plant.

Frangipani has so many names and symbolisms. Positive or negative symbolisms, this shrub will continue to spread its attractiveness and the extra- ordinary scent.🙂
