🛕 Only In Cambodia Photos 📸 Part 2 😕

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY4 years ago (edited)

The whole family has been missing Cambodia for far too long, and this post is an extension of part 1, just more photos I think are very Cambodian.

Cambodia is such a strange and unique place. I lived there 10 years, speka the language fluently and understand less now than I did before I learned the language. Don't miss 🏍️ Only In Cambodia Photos 😕 Part 1.

🛕 Only In Cambodia Photos 📸 Part 2 😕

Cambodia is not the wild-west like it was from 2000 to 2010, but the Cambodian spirit is a very independent one full of humor.

If you venture off the well-beaten path, you are likely to find truly some funny, incredible and memorable experiences. These are some more photos I've taken through the years that exemplify some of the uber-Cambodian things you might see.

Reduce Your Risk Of Lard With Snacks

You can always find some cool "Engrish" if you keep your eyese open. I'm a vegan, so didn't get to find out how much lard risk could be reduced by this fish snack.

My dream Cambodian job has always been to work as a freelance English grammar and vocabulary marketing consultant.

Random Gifts At Your Doorstep

It's not really appropriate to visit friends or family without bringing a small offering, usually something edible.

Above and beyond is when a random visitor misses you, but leaves you a gift of your favorite fruits on your doorstep to let you know they stopped by.

Leave Your Helmet On

You can keep your helmet on at all times, no worries. There are plenty of falling coconuts, jackfruits and other high-hanging heavy edibles that could kill you in a split second.

It's easiest to just leave your helmet on, plus it creates a hands-free option for phone calls while driving your motorbike. All you need to do is make your call, jam the phone in between your ear and the helmet, and no need for ear bluetooth earbuds.

Prison Playgrounds

This prison has actually been shuttered for several years, but I remember it well. The gate was always open, and it was common to see kids going in and out to take advantage of the clean wide open recreation space just inside the gate.

Limited Reading Choices

The only country making an effort to publish books in the Khmer langauge on a massive scale is Thailand. When the Thai bazaar comes to town, you get an odd chance to purchase English to Khmer translated books.

I already know how to think like a champion Donald, but thanks anyways.

Exploding Stoves

The longer you cook, the harder you are rolling the dice of life. This is my niece cooking on top of a dangerous stove with another less dangerous stove.

The one she is cooking with uses disposable butane cartidges, but in Cambodian the cartridges are refilled again and again until they spring a leak. It's more environmentally friendly and less wasteful, but dangerous for your face.

More Creative Homework Answers

I already shared an epic homework answer in my previous "🏍️ Only In Cambodia Photos 😕 Part 1" post. The one below is equally epic.

I wouldn't consider it technically a wrong answer, but it's certainly in the gray zone. Touché, you only need a capital "A."

Russian Mafia Weirdness

This was taken in Sihanoukville many years ago, not sure if this weird cafe still exists. The Russian and Turkish mafias used to violently battle for control of this town.

Then one day the Chinese and their money came to town, and the Russian and Turkish mafias were gone within a year. Now the town is full of Chinese skyscraper casinos and hotels.

Humble Improvised Classrooms

This was the first job I had back in 2010, $60 a month for 6 days a week 1-hour English lessons. It involved waking up at 4:00am and executing a 45 minute bicycle commute.

The "classroom" was set up behind a 5-star hotel for the Angkor Wat sunrise tuk-tuk driver fleet. I was a horrible teacher with zero experience back then, I didn't even deserve the $60 salary.

Life On The Floor

For most Cambodians, daily life takes place on the floor. If you've ever wondered why many Asians don't like pets, especially pets in the house, this is one obvious reason.

Our landlord at this room had dogs 20 meters from our door, but we still would find the odd doghair in our food from time to time.

That cooking setup is really insane. 🤣

Nice compilation of photos. Thanks for sharing.

Even more insane is I knew a guy who would "overfill" disposable butane cartridges for an extra 300 riel (8 cents). The extra gas lasted a bit longer, but all you have to do is drop the canister and you have an instant house rocket. There is no need to overfill something that is meant to be used once and never again.

@Sreypov, do you remember this picture of the @KidSisters?

Yeah, I never forget these.

That was a thoroughly enjoyable post! The crazy stove gives me some anxiety though haha.

Thanks, it's amazing the danger one can become complacent with after just a few months of constant exposure.

Odd dog hair in your food? What do you mean by that?

The wind sometimes carried dog hair from our landlord's house into our room while we were eating on the floor.

Nice one... I remember the prison down the street. Always found it entertaining how open it was. Was that Sam that left the noni? Funny how much people love to wear their helmets everywhere there. Here they really don't like to wear them anywhere especially on motorbikes... Remember eating great food on your floor hehe. Those haircuts are the Cambodian version of the ole bowl haircuts we got as kids from our Dad... Best of part of it for me was being able to be completely alone just a short ride away... Loved to go thru the salt flats and end up at a deserted resort on the bay... And yes I have both of those stoves here but they don't refill the canisters in Thailand... So much for recycled face bombs...

Yeah, lots of good memories in this post. I look at those haircuts and I remember that the girls haven't cut their hair since we've been together.

I think the bowl cut look comes from them growing their hair out after their short cut. It did look a little 1980's for a while though.

Yes and no, that is one of nieces wearing her father's helmet, although she had her own too. I don't really remember what was going on when I took that pic, but I think she was just trying to be ridiculous.
