There was a time when I thought every goodbye had to be painful. I believed that whenever something ended, it meant loss. But as I grew older, I started to understand that some endings are not meant to break us. They are meant to teach us, change us, and leave us with memories that stay long after the moment has passed.
A few years ago, one of my closest friends moved to another city. We had spent countless evenings together, talking about life, work, and our dreams. When the day came for him to leave, I expected sadness. Of course, there was some. But what surprised me was the feeling of gratitude. Instead of focusing on the fact that he was leaving, I found myself remembering all the good moments we had shared.
That experience reminded me of a sunset.
When the sun goes down, we do not usually stand outside feeling angry that the day is ending. We stop and admire the colors in the sky. We appreciate the beauty of the moment even though we know it will not last forever.
Life works in a similar way.
Many of us experience goodbyes that are not caused by distance. Sometimes a job ends. Sometimes a project finishes. Sometimes a chapter of life quietly closes without us even noticing it at first. In those moments, we can spend our energy wishing things had stayed the same, or we can appreciate what that experience gave us.
I remember reading comments from different people online who shared similar thoughts. One person said that the hardest part of leaving a workplace was not the work itself but the people who had become part of their daily life. Another said that after moving away from their hometown, they realized that the memories they carried were more valuable than the places they left behind. These stories reminded me that goodbyes are something everyone experiences, no matter where they come from.
Even on Steemit, I have seen users take breaks, move on to new goals, or return after a long absence. The platform changes, people come and go, but the friendships, lessons, and experiences remain. Those are the things that truly matter.
The beauty of a sunset is not that it lasts forever. Its beauty comes from the fact that it is temporary. In the same way, some of the most meaningful moments in our lives become precious because we know they cannot stay exactly as they are.
Today, when I think about goodbyes, I try not to see them only as endings. I try to see them as reminders of something valuable that happened. If a goodbye hurts, it often means that the experience was worth having in the first place.
So the next time life asks you to say goodbye to a person, a place, or a chapter of your journey, remember the sunset. It signals the end of the day, but it also fills the sky with colors that people stop to admire.
Some goodbyes are like sunsets. They mark an ending, but they leave behind beauty.
Have you ever experienced a goodbye that felt more like a sunset than a storm? I'd love to hear your thoughts and personal experiences in the comments. 🌅
