Sixteen year old Jakai bid his family farewell, then turned to his brother, Samuel two years his junior, and nodded. Time to head out to the small lake to collect their portion of the fish. The day had dawned crisp, but now turned cloudy as small flakes of snow fell upon their jackets.

He and Samuel trudged through the white slush, with him pulling the small sled. The task should have been an easy one for him.

However, he was weary. Not from physical work. That was mandatory to help his family. But working twelve hours at the work camp for pennies a day dashed all hopes of ever being able to save even a small amount.

Not only that, he worried about the village gossip. New log jamming operations slowly prevented the steady supply of fish for the families residing in the camp.

His hands ached. Looking down at his feet, tears welled up. The extra padding stuffed in his snow shoes wasn't helping. If only his family could afford a parka for himself and Samuel and a new pair of shoes. All depended upon their haul today.

They paused at the bank on the village side of the lake.

Taking a moment to reflect on their journey, both brothers marveled at the glistening waters, tall trees, and white-tipped mountains resting majestically in the background at the north end of the rushing waters.

Just as Jakai knelt to unload his shed, behind him Samuel shouted, "look, the water bubbles. What's happening? Why aren't fish jumping in the lake?"

Yes, the fish in their lake were usually active that time of year. They were also plentiful, supplying the villagers with a main staple and sufficient protein source. The last few years, the shoal of fish had dwindled, especially in the last few months.

An eerie quiet descended over the water, except the intermittent bubbles in a wide circle.

Jakai jerked his head as he rose quickly, frowning at the large bubbles that had formed upon the water's skim.

"I've never seen this. I'll wade out and investigate." Jakai's steady voice did not match the increasing dread slowly spreading in his thoughts.

"I'll come with you," Samuel commanded instead of asking as usual.

"No, stay here!" Jakai shouted. "I'll not put your safety at risk."

He tread carefully a few inches into the icy, cold waters. Only several inches from the shore, he paused, eyes widening as if he'd seen a dangerous wild animal.

To his disbelief, dozens of fish were floating just beneath the surface of the water. But he didn't detect any movement.

The fish were not in distress. They were dead.

Instinctively, he grabbed a small one, turned and waded as fast as he could. He needed a sample to show his father and other villagers.

As soon as he made it to shore, Samuel grabbed his brother's jacket. Pointing, he yelled, "look on the other side of the lake. The shoreline looks black."

Jakai scoured the area. He'd not seen dead fish of his massive quantity since he was a small child fishing with his father. He wondered whether others knew of this calamity.

Jakai opened the fish's mouth and sniffed.

He fell to his knees, ignoring the moisture penetrating to his thermals. There would be no fish for his family's needs. None to share or sell. No new parkas. Nothing until the village elders reported the incident to the authorities so they could determine what happened in their lake.

He didn't want to alarm Samuel. But his anguish could not be contained.

Jakai stifled a scream. Instead, he looked up with hands raised, the fish in one staring back, both hurt and wondering why?

"Nunca he visto esto. Iré a investigar".

"¡No, quédate aquí!" gritó Jakai.

No quería alarmar a Samuel.

A heartbreaking story with a bleak outlook! You vividly capture the struggles and determination of the young boys to secure fish for their family's survival. It's a harsh reality to work long hours for meager pay and then arrive at the lake to find their source of food and money dead.

I wonder what caused the death of the fish. How will their community survive? I think this shows how fragile life is—one day, everything looks alright and the next, it changes! Palpable and well-written. I wish you a wonderful day. !LADY
