The blazing midday sun relentlessly pursued beachgoers scrambling for the cool of the shade and water. They played and relaxed. In the afternoon others, hungry for the sun's free rays of golden perfection, basked in its warmth as it bathed their backsides in mellow light. Roasted on one side, they flipped like a pancake to finalize the cooking process. Not a care in the world, Heather noticed.

Perspiration beaded, then slithered down into Heather's swim parka as she sat watching intently the waves roll in. That coverup would only hold her for a little while longer. Soon, she would be uninhibited in the waves straddling her surfboard.

Instead of spending her weekends off relaxing with her boyfriend, Robert, away from her lifeguard duties, she glanced over at him. He leaned back, braced himself, and allowed his new, expensive transitions to perform their task. Peeking over his shades, he stared back at her for several seconds before lowering his gaze at the missed opportunity.

The outgoing tide jerked the tension built up the past six months, strangled it under its ripples and drug it down deeper, refusing to allow it negative breath.

It didn't matter. The moment had slipped away for the answer Robert had waited for since the blowup.

Heather rose quickly and ran toward the white rushing waves. Robert could only wave at her backside and wait for her return. He didn't have to wait long. She removed her gear, donned the swim parka and shades, then eased down again next to him, accepting the snack he'd prepared for their outing.

But she couldn't remain calm.

Rising quickly, she vigorously brushed off sand, avoiding Robert's gaze. The decision he sought from her was elusive, floating in the confines of her mind between the past and present. The truth was that she didn't know when she would be ready. It wasn't today.

The shoreline called. To ease her tension, she turned and with head bowed, strolled west toward the opposite end of the beach. Any section would do, as long as it was far enough from Robert's hopeful stares.

About halfway, a strange, but familiar voice penetrated her thoughts. She turned toward the waves.

Immediately, Heather noticed arms flapping in the water. Not playful as she'd been taught to recognize, but frantic thrusts, combined with that familiar voice. She turned and signaled to the nearest lifeguard.

Without a second thought, she let drop her swim parka and ran into the water. Beachgoers and a lifeguard rushed toward the edge of the water. They watched as she brought the lifeless man to shore. She turned him over.

It was him. The reason for her tension. The reason she couldn't move forward. The reason she now had to deal with fertility issues. The scum of the Earth.

Her ex-boyfriend, Marshall.

"Aren't you going to help him!" an onlooker yelled.

For an awkward second, she hesitated, then exposed her badge, and dropped to her knees to administer aid. The world around her dimmed. The man beneath her was a victim on this day. Heather's automatic response training rose up and replaced the face before her with that of a stranger.

It was the first time her mouth had touched his in two years. But before she could register a repugnant feeling, a woman who looked at least ten years younger than she rushed over and fell to his feet, crying profusely.

The young woman managed a few words. "Please save him. Oh my love, I can't lose you."

The young woman's words tore through Heather's mind as the past two years without Marshall gripped her senses and flung her fully into the present. Heather's mind commanded her to stop, but her hands continued pumping.

"Why save him?" her parents' voices whispered. "He done you dirty. He's not worth it."

Exhausted herself, she relaxed when Marshall finally coughed hard and spat out salty water.

In the commotion, Heather didn't realize that Robert stood over her, holding the onlookers back so that medical personnel could approach. From his eyes, she could sense that his thoughts coincided with her parents. Although Robert didn't need their disdain. On numerous occasions he pleaded his own case of Marshall's hold over her.

Heather understood Robert's point. Her previous relationship with Marshall prevented him from realizing his dream. He was determined to prove that not all men resorted to breadcrumbing in a relationship. He told her upfront his intentions and never held back his affections.

But Heather's anger at being previously deceived cut deep, coupled with the fact that he doled out sparsely his love, but gave her fully a communicable disease. One that she discovered through intensive treatment may threatened any future chance of conception. And she desperately wanted a family.

Heather looked down at Marshall. Slowly, she looked up, her gaze locating Robert. His mouth opened, then closed. with the pursed lips exposing his feelings.

A tiny voice rose up. Seize the hour.

Before she could do that, a stillness quieted her heart. The void clamped shut. Now was the time she realized she'd been waiting to expel Marshall from her bruised heart.

Heather stared intently at the young lady wailing over Marshall. She reached out and covered the lady's hand.

"Marshall is going to be fine. Don't worry. My name is Heather, and what you should be worried about is that he will breadcrumb you. He will gaslight you. He will lie to you. He will deceive you. And, most importantly, he probably won't tell you that I reported him to the Center For Disease Control. Ask him why, and please be careful. Good luck."

With that, Heather rose, placed her swim parka back on, and strode into Robert's arms and her future.

"I'm ready now to commit to you and discover how we can include children in our future."

No importaba.

Oh, amor mío, no puedo perderte".

Heather miró a Marshall.

I'm in awe of Heather's decision after reading this story. The effects of a toxic relationship can linger forever if the victim is not careful and possibly affect future relationships. I understand her hesitation to commit fully to Robert and his patience with her is admirable.

The conflict of deciding whether or not to save Marshall is delicate and though-provoking. I hope the girlfriend heeds Heather's warning seriously.

Your story is beautifully written, emotionally gripping and palpable. You capture the tension and emotions brilliantly. !PIMP 💕

Heather is ready to move forward. I'm sure that will her new boyfriend and therapeutic help, she will be able to reconcile the trauma she lived through. It won't be immediate, but she is willing to move forward.

Doing the right thing contrary to one's personal feelings speaks volumes of the true integrity of a person. Heather did the right thing. Marshall will get his just desserts in due time.

Thanks so much for your visit and lovely compliment for my story. I appreciate it and your support.
