The Ashley Madison data breach in 2015 done by the group "The Impact Team" not only affected the lives of the users who were using the website for discreet extramarital affairs, it also led to the discovery of many dishonest practices of the Canadian company. The hack was orchestrated as a part of internet vigilantism against the company.

Several batches of private data impacting 36 million users were released in a matter of days. The released data included names, ethnicity, eye colour, height, weight, E-mail, credit card details, mailing address, amount of money spend on Ashley Madison, sign up dates and IP addresses. The Impact Team claimed to have gotten their hands on 300GB of data due to extremely bad security practices employed by the company such as hard-coded security credentials and having no proper measures against bots. Later a group named CynoSure revealed that they have been able to crack 11 million passwords in a matter of 10 days. 120,000 users used “123456” as their password.
