Building Homes For New Families On The Homestead

I’m introducing two new families to the homestead this spring! I’ve been rushing around trying to get their homes ready. This was one of the most time consuming projects on the homestead and honestly I would recommend just buying them already built lol

The homestead has been growing and in fact today I did a podcast that goes over the story of the homestead so far and future plans for it. You can give that a listen on my site at The Gubba Homestead Update There’s still so much to do but I’ve gotten much better at reassuring myself that these things take time and one step at a time. This helps me in not feeling overwhelmed and honestly just enjoy the process of building the homestead into what I dream for it to be.

Having bees on the homestead as part of the homestead family is a huge goal to getting self-sufficient. These bees will help the garden and fruit trees as well as producing honey that stores for a very long time, used in breads and other meals I make.

Another big bonus for me is watching these hives grow and caring for another creature. This hobby comes with huge benefits to the homestead and just in general taking care of a creature and helping it thrive so it provides for me.

Here are some important questions to ask yourself if beekeeping is right for you.

  1. Is your reasoning for starting bees something other than making money?
  2. Do you care about the wellbeing of bees and want to better the environment?
  3. Do you have patience to learn and adapt?
  4. Can you provide the time required for caring for bees?
  5. Are you not allergic to bees?
  6. Do you like honey?
  7. Do you have a place to keep the bees?

If you answered yes to the above questions then consider moving forward to hobby or even commercial beekeeping! You’ll also want to look at your HOA if you have one or the restrictions in your area you live. Some will have ordinances pertaining to beekeeping and if it’s allowed or not. Lucky for me out here on the homestead I get to pretty much do whatever I want which is a whole new sense of freedom I’ve come to really enjoy!

In my next video I’ll show you introducing the bees to their homes. But first we need to build them!

We eat a lot of honey and I was considering adding a few bee hives to our homestead, but we have a few big beekeepers in our neighborhood so in the end I was too lazy to actually do it :D and we just buy honey from them :) Tho the process of keeping the bees is still very interesting! @tipu curate

It's always great having other homesteaders around you that specialize in something. That way you all can swap and help each other out.

Damn, its amazing you are building homes for others! :D

Yay! 🤗
