Introducing My Dream Homestead Animal

I still can't believe it!
Out here on the homestead you tend to impulse buy some rather odd items. lol

In this video I introduce a new family member to the homestead, a new animal that now provides me with what feels like an endless supply of milk! She’s a beautiful jersey cow and is due to give birth in September. The calf is a mix of jersey and black angus which would make the calf a hybrid breed.

Hybrid can be used for either meat or dairy but is not specialized for one. While a jersey is great as a homestead cow providing me with around two gallons of milk per day! Angus on the other hand are your meat cows that are sent to the bucher when fully grown.

I went back and forth for a while about goats or a cow and finally decided on one when the opportunity presented itself. The dairy was downsizing and when I saw her I fell in love and knew she needed to be here on the homestead.

She does have a few friends in the field next to her that come over and keep her company as her fencing is part of the fencing for the other cows in the field next to her allowing her to have some company. In fact one day they got a little too crazy lol I’ll be sharing that story with you here this week right here on hive only!

Starting with a dairy cow, who doesn’t love cows? They’re so stinkin cute so that’s definitely a plus but goats are cute too so we’re really tied there. For dairy cows, I learned that there are quite a few varieties to choose from. You have Holstein (which is the traditional commercial dairy cow because they produce so much milk), brown Swiss (which are known for cheese making) jersey (which is the traditional homestead dairy cow and produces A2 milk), guernsey (which are very similar to jersey), Highlander (which is a dual purpose breed meaning you can raise for meat and milk) So over the course of deciding what kind of dairy animal is right for me, I dove into the different breeds and learned a lot about them. It’s neat how different breeds do different things. So you definitely have choices when you decide you want a dairy cow.

It is exciting adding a new dairy cow to the homestead. Just curious, what do you do with the two gallons of milk produced per day?

I drink a lot of it but that what I can't drink goes to my dogs, freeze dried for long term storage, cheese and neighbors who need it.

The milk sure serves a lot of purposes, makes me want to keep a cow too, thanks for the reply.

I made a cow battery charger once.

But it didn't work because it's just a picture.

😂

Yay! 🤗

The other benefit of a Jersey is that they have one of the highest solids per litre of milk of any cow. If you sold milk here in New Zealand you’d get paid by solid per litre of milk so would work in your favour with Jerseys.

My first job out of school was farmhand and we had mostly Jerseys. They are also one of the friendliest cows you can get.

Great purchase.

That's amazing! I bet being a farmhand came with many stories.

Some, but mostly as a result of being a townie working the land. Actually, from what I can see, somewhat similar to your situation, except I didn't own anything.

Moving day was pretty cool. Once we had to move cows from one farm to another. A distance of about 5 kilometres. I got to ride the bike all that time. As a result I first rode motorcycles on the farm which led me to my life long dream of becoming a motorcyclist.

I feel this would be a great story to tell actually. I'll write it up and link here for you to read. It might even give you some tips... like how you SHOULDN'T plant Agapanthas. 🤣

Here's my story about my farming life. It's a pretty long story and I probably should have split it but it covers most of what I had to do with a couple of stories thrown in for good measure.

Your life has just gotten busier my dear... although maybe not that much busier. 😂
