When I was in Wilmington over the weekend I took some time out of my bike ride to visit some of my new favourite photography subjects: some local fire hydrants.
I've recently grown to have quite a fascination with these pieces of equipment. They're everywhere! They're full of character, colour, and usually in an easy to access location.
Take this, for example. This cute little guy is parked right beside the bike/walking path on the riverfront; very out of the way, yet quite noticeable.
Sometimes fire hydrants are meant to be artistic as well as utilitarian. The Wilmington Riverfront (capitalised, since the city does so) is setting up the riverfront to be an upscale artistic destination with high-end restaurants, a minor league baseball field, hotels and the like. To keep the artsy flavour of the location, they've installed cute little fire hydrants such as this. Aint it cute?
One thing I did notice was that, unlike Newark and New Castle, all the hydrants on the Wilmington Riverfront are one solid colour, not two. Red and yellow are the colours of choice:
And kept in good shape! No ratty, paint peeling and flaking fire hydrants here. I suspect that if I went into the city proper I'd find hydrants that are much more in neglect.
And sometimes they grow out of the wall!
