Birds on a Wire

in The LIFESTYLE LOUNGE4 years ago

A couple of weeks ago, as part of my @photo52 contest, @fotostef put in an entry for really neat bird decoration: https://steempeak.com/photo52/@fotostef/new-birds-on-the-balcony. Not only was I impressed with the photos, I was impressed because I thought I was the only one who had birds of that nature!

So mine aren't outside. And I only used my phone to take the pictures, so there's no fantastic bokeh. And the colours maybe aren't as vibrant, but I'm still tickled pink that someone else has these types of birds!

These were given as a gift by an eccentric and slightly mad old spinster a number of years ago (I believe she was 85 and lived in London during WWII - she had every right to be an eccentric mad spinster), a couple years before she passed away. She was a riot, and I used to take a lot of pleasure in egging her on. Once, when she was upset with her husband I had suggested that she trade him in for a girlfriend. She looked at me oddly and replied that she had several girlfriends already. I just smirked. A few days later when she saw me next she swatted me after finding out what I had meant.

The old lady finally passed on, and her husband shortly after that. Her mind began to rapidly deteriorate, and it was almost a blessing for her to finally be done with the ravages of age. I remember, when she gave these birds, I had thought to myself, "What. The. Hell...?" and attributed it to her eccentricity. But I've come to really adore these birds and hope they have just as long a lifespan and she did.

Ooo.. This is really beautifully made.
Looks like handmade and sewn very well.
You've just reminded me a indoor decoration piece I had back home.
Given to me by a junior colleague when he went to India

I have definitely grown to appreciate this more over the years. Unfortunately I don't even know where she picked it up, but it really is a neat decoration.

Is it handmade or bought abroad? Enjoy them. 💕

I do know that it was purchased, and I think it was from their trip to Spain, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I do enjoy it though!

@wwwiebe That makes sense. Big chance it is. Happy day ❤️

Sweet!!! I have some very similar except they are ones that I use at Christmas and not birds, but horses. It even has the beading and little stuffed figurines. I bought them in Poland close to the Russian border years ago. They are packed up, but, if you remind me next year, I would love to show them to you.

I love your story and these are the type of thing that memories are made of. Have a brilliant day, my friend.

They really are full of memories, aren't they? And we can keep them out all the time. I'm looking forward to seeing the ones you have next Christmas!

Me neither!! How cool!!

I like the way you wrote about this. It shows that despite this lady's odd ways and this thing she had given you, deep inside you thought highly of her and what you knew about her life experiences. A very sweet tribute is what I think I read here today.

She really was a good person. She couldn't cook for anything, but her frozen brandy punch always had close to an extra bottle of brandy in it. I miss her.

🍻 Hold onto the memories my friend.

That is a great memento, I guess everytime you look at it reminds you of her. I counted 12 birds and wondering if it meant something from where ever it came from.

You know, it's interesting you bring up the number twelve. Just the other day I had mentioned elsewhere that twelve was my favourite number as a child. I have no idea why, but I still rather like it. There are twelve signs in the zodiac, twelve Greek gods, twelve Norse gods, and the number twelve is absolutely everywhere in the Bible.

I have nothing similar in my house. But I wanted to continue reading about the history of the old woman and her eccentricity :)
regards

LOL! I'll see if I can come up with some other good stories. She was always so much fun. And always with a smile. After surviving WWII she knew every day was a good day to be alive, and she enjoyed every one.

Just yesterday I watched a documentary about the survivors of a death camp in Germany. They still had the numbers to identify them. I cried with them

Nice story. Some people manage to leave behind more that eccentric memories. Those birds are peculiar

Thank you! Those birds really are peculiar, but I can't imagine not having them now.

The birds look handmade. What a lovely memento to have from your friend.
I had a plaque on the wall that needed some color and I added some birds and a beehive I found that was empty.

That's a really nice plaque! The birds definitely add a colourful touch!

Thanks WW. I’ve had it on the wall for a long time...looking closer I see the birds need a dusting. 😂

Gifts like this come with so much love and meaning, every time you look at it your thoughts automatically go back to the fun times and teasing.

These birds are wonderful @wwwiebe, such a great gift. You'll have those fun memories and stories to share with friends for years to come. Sounds like a really neat gal. Thanks for sharing :)

How pretty, I thought they were fishing lures when I saw the first photo @wwwiebe 😁

Yes very unique and eccentric in nature. It's cool how it worked it's way into your life and home. I prefer items with memories attached.. as long as they are good memories ;-)

Is that a caricature just above the light switch? Oh boy.. we have to see that someday :-)

Yep! You really cared for that old lady my friend and in her wisdom she left you a reminder to care for all.
Blessings!

Howdy sir wwwiebe! Those birds are wonderful, I've never seen anything quite like them!

You also made me transport myself back to my childhood, my grandmother had something like this in one of the spaces in the house. What nice memories. Those birds look very easy to make, I'd like to make a terrace

Those birds are really beautiful. They look handmade. I feel that she wanted someone to have them to continue on with them and to cherish them as she had. It's funny too because when you look at those birds, they remind you of her and your time with her.

I've received lots of items from the elderly in my family. I try to keep them as nice as I can and not let anything happen to them.

I remember my 94 year old great aunt wanted to give me her wood-burning stove. I loved it, and wanted to bring it home from the country. But sadly her house burned down, and everything was destroyed. I wish now I'd taken a picture of it at least. I can still remember her sitting in front of the stove in the middle of her living room.

Thanks do sharing her birds and story.
