RE: The Shortening of the Day — Observing the Small Changes of Life

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

In deep summer the sun rises north of the Small garden, deep in the northeast. In winter it sets southwest of the New Herb garden. In the solstices, due to the house's orientation for solar gain, the rising sun in spring goes right through the house and out the west window. Until we built the addition, that didn't happen in autumn as there were too many trees. But I expect it also does it now, as the trees are gone. I've yet to remember to watch for it...

Clearly, you also pay attention to your surroundings, and to the small signs the seasons and nature send us as "markers."

Things are running late here in western Washington, due to a particularly long, cold and wet spring. Photos from last year show me processing the last green beans for the freezer; this year I just finished the first batch, a couple of days ago. However, the more permanent markers like the sun and daylight stay ever constant.
