AFCON 2022 has finally arrived

in Sports Talk Social2 years ago (edited)

The 2021 Afcon will be in 2022. The tournament is scheduled to be hosted by Ivory Coast but will now be hosted by Cameroon. Ivory Coast will now host the 2023 AFCON tournament. It has seen more controversy than ever before. However as these controversies have been put aside, it is a football event in Africa where the best footballers on the continent are wearing the jerseys of their respective countries at the end. As with all competitions, there are favorites.

Below are some of the goal setting shareware that can be use.

Algeria

The people of North Africa have long been undefeated. In fact their latest losses came in 2019; the year in which the last AFCON was played. It was Morocco in the African Nations Championship tournament that only included players running in their home league. Since most Algerian players trade in Europe, we can easily put that aside. Their last true loss started in October 2018, a 35+ game run. At the time, they were vying for the 2021 ARAB Cup. Having won the tournament twice, they will be relying on talismen Riyad Mahrez and Said Benrahma, who were in top form this season for England's Westham United. Veteran, Yacine Brahimi, who won the gold medal in the recently concluded Arab Cup and is a key player to be considered. They have been drawn with Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea in Group E. The Desert foxes will hopefully become the only team in Africa to win the tournament in a row.

Senegal:

Senegal's runners-up in 2019, Senegal have not lost in their AFCON and World Cup qualifiers. Among the favorites, they seem to have the simplest team on paper. Stars Sadio Mane and Eduard Mendy are both some of the world's best footballers. In particular Mendy has been in top form since moving to Chelsea about 18 months ago. Captain Sadio Mane had a disappointing campaign last season and looks set to return. The Senegalese football federation will hopefully end a dispute with Watford over the release of star player Ismaila Sarr before the tournament kicks off on January 9. The Hornets say he is not fit to play at the moment as he has a knee injury in late November. However, Senegal, the only African country in the FIFA top 20, will remain a threat.

Nigeria:

The 3-time African Cup of Nations winner will enter the tournament with the exception of two in-form African strikers Emmanuel Dennis of Watford and Victor Oshimen of Napoli. West African giants who in 1994 were ranked 5th in the world (the highest level scored by an African team) will go into the tournament relying on Leicester City duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi. The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group D with seven African champions Egypt facing January 11. in his hand.

Egypt:

The North African team has won the tournament seven times and will be hoping to recover after a disappointing home defeat last year by South Africa in the round of 16. The king of Egypt and captain Mohammed Salah who has been unpacking all the cylinders since the start of the season will know. Recommended by many scholars as the world's greatest athlete, the star will hopefully lead them to glory. The Egyptian Pharaohs are also proud of Arsenal midfielder Elneny.

Morocco:

Experienced coach Vahid Halihodzic recently made the bold decision to drop star player Hakim Ziyech from AFCON 2022. Will Morocco regret his absence from what football fans want to see. It has been a pleasure to watch in recent times though. Prior to the recent Arab Cup defeat against Algeria, the Atlas Lions had won 12 games in a row, an astonishing record of being released only once in those games.

AFCON 2022 is scheduled to be the 33rd edition. It will start on 9 January and the last will be on February 6.

Sort:

As a Newcastle fan I'll be keeping an eye on this tournament. Although we are light on African players in the current squad I have fond memories of following the progress of some of our former players in the AFCON. Hopefully, our new ownership will be sending scouts there too to see if we can find any of the continent's brightest prospects.

Here are some of my favourites from past squads: Demba Ba & Papiss Cisse (Senegal), Cheik Tiote (Ivory Coast), Shola Ameobi (Nigeria), Chancel Mbemba (DRC), Christian Atsu (Ghana).

Nice one

Nice one mate, glad to see someone looking forward to the AFCON.

Demba ba was a gem

I can't wait for it to begin, I will definitely be writing about the AFCON matches.
