Pure Skill
This is something that everyone should have a go off sometime if they visit Galway. It's called pure skill and it's located over in Knocknacara. It's mainly for sports enthusiasts I suppose but I reckon even people that aren't mad in the sports we get some fun out of this. The concept is you have a maximum of 100 points to score and points get taken away for every miss that you have across ten different sporting disciplines.
The disciplines can be seen on the score cards at the end of this post. They are Soccer , Gaelic, Rugby, Baseball, Cricket, Golf chipping, Golf putting, Basketball, Tennis and Hurling.
For some you get 10 balls then you have to chip them kick them or return them to a certain place. In the soccer for instance the goal is divided into four quarters unit 2 into the bottom left turn to the bottom right three into the top left and three into the top right you get one mark for each you do and a zero for once you fair with the ten balls that you get.
Here is a sample of the games they have on offer.
Gary Neville and Pure Skill
So you get the idea and this place is popular with sports fanatics from around Galway and surrounding areas and as also a firm favourite with stag parties and hen parties as well.
That's where Gary Neville comes into the equation. Came across to Galway a few years ago with a bunch lads from Manchester on a stag party the lads visited pure skill on a Friday evening and had a crack at all the games. Gary was so into it that he tried to convince the stag and all the lads to come back up again on Saturday so we could have another go and try to beat this top score which at that stage was 65 out of 100 and held by Gary Traynor. It's long since been beaten by John Paul O'Connell who got a very impressive 78 out of 100 which is actually unbelievable as somebody's games are very very difficult to get full set.
So Gary comes over with the stag and ends up getting a lot of abuse off his friends as unbelievably he doesn't guess 10 out of 10 in the soccer and only manages six out of 10 with most of the lads beating them and the stag himself getting to nine. I say would have been great crack to you there watching that stag when that was going down.
The boys in action
No now forgot stags, here's a few pictures of the action from today from my two boys. I didn't bother having a go today myself, as I wanted it to be about the boys as this was their first time having to go at pure skill and they'd actually did okay because this isn't easy.
