Round 2 Action

Moycullen opened up their Championship season with a hard fought battling display against an Spidéal last Sunday at Pearse Stadium. They went in at half time three points adrift, but dominated the second half and won by three points in the end. There wasn't much time for recovery before the second fixture in the Championship, a local derby against neighbours Oughterard who are managed by ex Galway United soccer manager Alan Murphy.

The contest was scheduled for 3:45pm and tickets were €10 for adults and under 16s were free, which makes it a very cheap family day out, for families who are into sport. My own day got off to a disastrous start from a sports point of view. As you guys know I play golf first thing on Sunday mornings, so yesterday was no different and I had missed the early slots on the time sheet, so I ended up with an 8:20 teeslot, which is very late by my standards. Part of me was looking forward to the lie in and sure the kids would be well up by 7am, so no need for an alarm, right? Bloody wrong! I woke to my wife asking: "Are you not golfing this morning?"

BOLLIX!!!! I'd slept in. I lept out of bed and threw on my golf clothes and hurried over to the club, arriving one minute before my tee time. No chips and putts in the practice area, nope, straight out on the course and man did it show! I made an 8 on the par 4 first, then went double bogey, par, double bogey. The day was over before it even got started. Hopefully Moycullen wouldn't be the same in this match, but Moycullen had turned up in plenty of time to get warmed up!

Moycullen vs Oughterard

The game got under way and unlike last week, it took both teams a little while to find their feet and settle and both teams kicked some uncharacteristic wides in a fairly dull first half, which saw the two teams go in level at 0-7 points apiece. Oughterard team manager Murphy would have been deighted with that score line and will have been very happy with how Galway senior player Mattew Tierney and his brother Enda acquited themselves, with Enda kicking two great points from play and Matthew notching one from a free kick.

Moycullen can often take a while to settle into a game, but they settled just fine into the second half and they killed Oughterard's challenge inside the first five minutes, while putting 1-4 on the board unanswered. They had equalled the first half tally of 33 minutes inside five second half minutes and in truth Oughterard never threatened again, as they struggled to close the gap which widened to as much as 9 points at times. Oughterard put a bit of gloss on the scoreline at the end of the game and the score was made a little more respectable, but in truth Moycullen were by far the better team and were well worthy of their win on a scoreline of:

Seán Kelly had a great game again and managed 2 points from full back, Peter Cooke was as physical as ever, a constant thorn in Oughterard's side, but it was Gallagher who was Moycullen's best player on the day, the man with 24 on his back scored three points from play at important stages in the game.

Thanks as always for stopping by everyone.

Peace Out
