My banana leaf lunch is served in an Indian restaurant in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. This is a traditional way to serve food from India and one of my newest loves.
The rice and three sides to the right are endless, and this is all that most customers order. I got the stewed mutton dish you see to the left as well, since I am not vegetarian.
Out of the sides, the light green cabbage dish is my favorite. I love cabbage in all ways I try it, and this slightly spicy and sour combination is a real winner.
I have about 4 servings of rice, and I do not make this mistake now. I ask for half rice so it stays hot, and then get more later if I want it.
The Indians and most others in the restaurant eat this meal with their hands. The fork is provided for me - the untalented Westerner - without a second thought.
I watch the others use their hands, but I'm not brave enough to try it myself. There is a whole scooping procedure that I am sure is not as easy as it looks.
The banana leaf is used as a plate for many reasons. It is said to be more sanitary than a plate. It is eco-friendly since no washing up occurs, and banana leaves do in fact, grow on trees. The leaves also release nutrients when hot food is placed on them, and it all makes for a lovely presentation.
Every single thing here is delicious, including the strong iced coffee you see. The only trouble is that the waiters refill your food so often that I gorge myself each time I come here. Small price to pay!
