Tesla's New Cybertruck Might Change the US Auto Industry Forever

in #cars4 years ago

Many people have weighed in already on the new Tesla CyberTruck. A lot of it bad. TSLA stock was down 6% on Friday.

But to be honest, most of the vitriol I’ve seen on Twitter and WeChat has come from folks who, honestly, look like they’ve never bought a truck in their life, nor would they ever have reason to in the future.

And yet, like sarcastic high schoolers, they can’t resist poking fun at this thing. Such is where we’re at in social media these days, where negativity and trolling gets you further, usually, than an honest take.

Nicholas Thompson of WIRED, who also doesn’t look much like a truck driver, said it best on Linkedin:

“Who knows exactly what it is? But it looked crazy. I liked it. I don’t think most other people did. But whatever. The more interesting questions are why is Tesla building a truck now.”

Exactly.

The Cybertruck is going to sell a lot. Why?

  1. It’s priced right.

  2. It’s practical. It is a movable generator and air compressor w/ a huge payload that can carry 3500 lbs while towing another 14k lbs.

  3. It looks good. I don’t care what the naysayers say. Have you seen the big nasty V8 trucks made by Ford and Toyota? For the most part, they are vanity trucks that need to be able to tow a vanity boat. In my humble opinion, those are some truly fugly beasts. For example, here is the 2020 Toyota Tundra:

Guys who buy trucks buy ‘em to use ‘em. I’ve owned a Tacoma, a Ranger, and a F-150... and hands down, that’s the best fucking truck I’ve ever seen. If the competition is that big hunk of vanity metal like the Tundra above, then the CyberTruck is a way better hunk of undentable shiny vanity metal. Usually you have to compromise payload with towing capacity. But with the Cybertruck you have 100 square feet of payload, plus a huge roomy interior, plus you can tow 1.75 tons of stuff behind you. Oh yeah, and there's that built-in generator and air compressor for doing your DIY projects on the go.

Amazing.

So this CyberTruck looks cool AND is useful.

That’s a rare combination.

No wonder Elon announced just a little over a day after the unveil that, against all the predictions of the naysayers, Tesla had already received 146,000 pre-orders for the Cybertruck to be delivered some time in 2021.

That's a $14.6 million interest-free loan for Tesla.

Amazing.
