Tournaments have some decent payouts.
I hadn't played a tournament in years since for a long time it was a losing proposition.
There were a few players with fully maxed out decks and that made it very hard to qualify for the prizes unless you played an absolutely perfect strategy with weaker cards.
I used to enjoy them a lot in the early days when you had to be there for a specific time and play each battle in the order that they came at you.
I got back into them last week when survival mode was put on pause and I wanted to play more battles so i checked to see what was on offer.
A lot apparently. $11,146 is a tidy sum to play for and while i don't have a modern deck. There are plenty of wild matches that i can take part in.
I know that for a worldwide audience it makes a lot more sense to have multiple 24 hour rounds but it is a bit boring submitting multiple teams in a row without seeing any battles taking place.
Most are based on American time so that means I need to submit teams early or i will be in bed or at work when the round closes so i can't wait for others to submit first.
Tournaments had a proud history in Splinterlands and were they first kind of competitive battles that we had in the game, long before leagues and land were released.
It was all organized through the steemmonsters discord with a specific time and a random draw for partners on challonge. There were no limits and just alpha and beta cards. The games were competitive and you had to challenge your opponent manually before reporting wins and losses manually as well. We have come a long way since that in the game and the world that they have built around the cards but it's still a fun memory of it's early origins.
Now those same cards are only relevant in wild mode while we have hundreds of options for playing with and thousands of strategies to compete with. It's hard to even know all of the cards in the game so predicting your opponent is a different ball game to what it used to be.
What i have noticed though is that for a lot of the wild tournaments now there is a very small field entering the competition so that you are guaranteed some profit from playing.
Look at this wild tournament that is coming up in the next few days and see how there are only 83 entrants so far.
It's 800 DEC to enter the diamond level tournament and with 83 entrants you are guaranteed to be in the top 128 users and get a tournament payout. Now part of this are the entry restrictions of 48,000 SPS and 654K Power which limits the field but if I just enter without placing up the rankings I will get a minimum of 186 SPS or 1618 DEC for a profit of 818 DEC.
It's the same for a lot of the alpha, beta and gold card tournaments. The modern are a lot more competitive but very few players have the summoners and decks to compete in the old alpha, beta contests. That's why I'm hoping to earn a few nice SPS payouts form these tournaments and expand my og deck.
There are a very limited number of these early cards so maxing them out is expensive business but hopefully over time i can find good deals and stack when it makes sense.
Try for yourself.
If you haven't played the game before then now is the best time to join. Today is much better than tomorrow and a lot better than later.
