Harvesting The Olives

It is the time of the year that the harvesting of olives begin. Most of the plot are planted with olive trees if not avocados or mangoes. Olive trees do not need plenty of water. In the beginning yes, but as soon as the trees are matured enough, they are taken care by mother nature.

It is a tradition that when harvesting the trees, family members join the elder ones to manually take all olives from the tree. Sometimes they use a huge plastic comb-like tool that combs the branches while others use a large wooden stab or bamboo stick to tap/hit the olives so that they fall down to the nets that are spread around the tree.

Even the small children help. And I noticed for them, it is a fun chore because all the family members are present and some could just play in and around the plot. Yeah, they have to do the harvesting manually , let the olives fall down on the ground and when a tree is done, they gather the fruits and put them in sacks and bring them to the cooperative for pressing. Around 15 kilos of olives needs to be pressed for a liter of the oil.

A huge net is spread around the tree and everyone at each side of the tree helps harvest the olives which then fall onto the net.

looks like not too difficult to harvest the olives and sounds quite fun too.

Indeed not difficult because the trees are kept low and while standing you can harvest with your bare hands ...Thanks.

you're welcome.

Awesome, picking olives looks a lot like manual picking coffee cherries. Wow - 15kg to make just one litre of olive oil - that’s a whole load of picking to do !COFFEEA

Indeed.... it´s a hard jib, but when the whole family joins , then it´s fun and not boring...
