2019: A Year of Demise and Disassembly

in #art4 years ago

As the year draws to a close, it seems appropriate to leave a small "footprint" or some kind of record of the year that was, and what it meant.

In a sense, it's funny to still have this blog as a "remnant" of a business that no longer exists. Maybe it's here so we can occasionally engage in some self-indulgent waxing nostalgic. Or maybe it's here as a reminder of something really cool we once did.

So, Once Upon a Time...

We had a small independent art gallery called "The Red Dragonfly." The business of art is tricky at the best of times, so when we had a flood in 2017, followed by massive road construction at our front door step... well, we just ran out of money and had to close our doors.

That's really the straightforward and simple version.

We could make lots of plausible excuses and rationalizations, but bottom line is that it just wasn't meant to be.

It has been six months, now. In retrospect, I really enjoyed being in the art gallery business — I love the art and creativity, and I love the artists. The Red Dragonfly was actually my second endeavor in the business.

Many years ago, I had a gallery named "The European Influence" in Austin, Texas from 1985 to 1999. Didn't quite make it to the turn of the millennium, but close. Ironically, that gallery was also haunted by a major road construction project... no floods there, but the shopping center operator/landlord went bankrupt. Which — I suppose — just goes to show that the old adage "There's always SOMEthing..." holds true.

2020 — Why Continue?

I will continue the blog in 2020 and forward, simply because I love art, and if I can post a few interesting and/or useful bits and pieces to help independent artists navigate their world... well, then it's worth it.

Aside from which, this can always be a nice venue for me to share some of my personal photography... which was actually on the walls at The Red Dragonfly between shows and when we had some bits of empty wall space.

Sadly, this account's upvote is terribly small, or I would add (as a "purpose") that this is here to give upvotes to worthy art and creative ventures. Because creatives deserve all the recognition and encouragement they can get!

One of these days, it might even mean more than 1/2 cent!

Till then, thanks for reading, and have a really Happy New Year!

My year also was full of sad events but lets hope for a better one:) 2020 ring really nice to my ears, lol. You can start a community if you like with the new Communities feature of steem. It could be like a virtual gallery, have contests and maybe in time you could find sponsors, curate etc:) I am wishing the best for the new year:)
