I would classify this show as reality tv. Having said that, I know that the editors work their magic to make the events even more entertaining.
It does appear that the struggles are real: sleep deprivation, hunger, and loneliness.
Several people have gotten hurt or sick in the few episodes I have watched. They show those shots up close and personal. Alone is not shying away from the blood and guts that I would associate with that type of rugged living.
