Both men and women swim in the lake and both have perished there as well. I suppose the legend is just told that way because it fits the storyline. The wormhole thing is really farfetched, but some people say that things or animals have sunk into the lake and emerged from a riverbed a few states north. Sounds fake, but who knows?
