WE83 post topics: My first time leaving home

in Weekend Experiences2 years ago

I will like to appreciate the effort of @galenkp and the #weekend-engagement for putting this up to share our first time experience which I really find quite interesting and awesome to partake on.

The topic I choose to share my own first time experience is the fourth topic which says;

Tell us about when you first moved out of home and took control of your own life independently from your parents. Were you nervous or excited by the prospect, were you forced to leave or was it by choice? How did the process go - smoothly or were there problems?

It all happened in the 2013 when I gained admission into higher institution and in that process it was my first time leaving home and since then I have been on my own. My decision never to return back home or stay with my parents was during my time in school and I was working at the same time when i was schooling because I knew how things was at home so I decided not to put burden or more expense to my parents because it was my decision to go to school since they don't have the money to push me further.

My parents stay in Lagos in the Western part of Nigeria, where I grew up as well and I gained admission in Ogun state which is also another state in the Western part but close to Lagos State where I went to study in the higher institution. At first I had no money to rent a place so I squatted with a friend of mine who accommodated due to the fact that we are in the same department, computer engineering to be precise and he welcomed me as a brother Despite the fact he knew me from no where.

I was a full time student in school so in that process I do come back home before 3pm and then I decided to look for something doing to get paid even if it a day job and luckily for me I saw this bar and lounge that needed workers very close to where I stay and I was very lucky to be employed there and the time interval to resume work was very ok by me which was in the evening around 5pm. Whenever I come back from lectures I will rest a little then resume work by 5pm, though it wasn't easy for me but I had to struggle to help myself.

The salary I was been paid there was 30 thousand naira which was around $80 and I was happy about it because with that I can pay for my school fees then solve other issues. With that process I started saving to rent a place of my own because I made the decision not to go back home again and start a life of my own since am not getting any younger anymore.

My work also help me a lot because I do see tips daily from work and we do close around 1am to 2am it depends, since where I was squatting with my friend and where am staying is nearby I didn't bother about it because within me I know my aim that need to be accomplished.

At the end am happy I got an apartment of my own which am grateful for not only from my savings but also tips I do see at work and at the end I graduated and also have my place of my own and during weekends I do travel to go see my mum just to check on her.

Best wishes to you fella :-)

Thanks I really appreciate @nathen007

That's a big feat especially since you were handling your expenses on your own. Shows much discipline 💪
